Grade 2-5?Useful introductions to the art of looking at paintings. Each book has 12 to 15 reproductions as well as details from several of them. While their quality is not outstanding, they do offer a playful approach to criticism. Throughout, questions are posed, encouraging readers to look closely at detail. Ross's cartoons make amusing and interesting references to the paintings and invite involvement. Landscape looks at process. Landscapes from different periods of history are compared. Painting focuses on what is going on in the pictures, how painters work, and why they paint in a certain way or concentrate on particular subjects. It invites readers to look at style, brush strokes, color, and purpose. Each book contains a few clear plastic overlays. While their effect is not totally successful, they do not detract from the books' general usefulness. While there's nothing new here, and the oversimplification is occasionally a bit confusing, these titles will serve as adequate overviews.?Jean Pollock, King Country Library System, Seattle, WA

fascinating book that shows children, so beautifully, what is a landscape painting. This is a beautiful way to educate children for art appreciation. And it is very nicely designed.

My two sons, ages 9 & 6, love leafing through this book, looking at the details of the different paintings and flipping the transparencies and cut-out pages to see them through different perspectives. I recently tracked down the other three books in the First Discovery Art Book series, which they enjoy just as much. The glossy pages, transparencies and spiral binding hold up well to lots of turning back and forth.
