This review is from: Landscapes and Gardens for Historic Buildings: A Handbook for Reproducing and Creating Authentic Landscape Settings (American Association for State and Local History) (Paperback)
This is an excellent starting point for the beginner. It builds a proper base in a very practical, hands on way. Favretti is a well-known expert in Southern historic garden circles. He's created historic landscapes himself and comes at his subject with a great deal of experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Victorian garden, April 21, 2009

Having a home built in 1845, my husband wants the landscaping to be "historically accurate." (But then he also wants me to dress as if it is 1845 but that is another story. He was born in the wrong century.) The book is filled with historical info (duh) and lots of garden ideas. My husband loves it. A thumbs up on this one!

If you own a historical home, you'll find this book fascinating, and I would also recommend it for anyone involved in civic planning and town council members. If you don't find the answers to you restoration questions here, the book has a great list of references for further research.
Topics include:
American landscape design 1620...1930, incl. landscaping for public buildings and spaces, cemeteries.
Research and plan development- site analysis, etc.
Authentic plants for period landscape settings
Maintaining the restored landscape- lawns, visitor circulation and wear, pest control, etc.
