Book Description

1419659391 978-1419659393 February 5, 2007
In this wide-ranging discussion, Robert Hamma draws upon scripture, psychology, and theology to lay out the framework for a spirituality of place. He explores what is involved in developing a 'sense of place' and reminds readers how the places of childhood become so important. After an exploration of the ancient Hebrews' tradition of 'the land' and Jesus' own sense of place, he leads readers to discover those places that have impacted them most, in particular home. Readers will find that they suddenly see with new eyes the places-past and present-that have shaped their spiritual journeys and recognize them as doorways to the sacred.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In a landscape of general books on the inner life, Robert Hamma's unique treatment of a spirituality of place stands out. In it, he reminds us that 'each place matters'; 'each place is alive.' Enjoyable to read, easy to journey with, its conclusions are based on an array of scholarly and classic seminal works. In reading it, we too become 'place people,' pilgrims who are sensitive to God in new and helpful ways. A truly good read. Ideal for faith-sharing groups as well." -- Robert Wicks

"Landscapes of the Soul is inspiring, inspiriting, and comforting. Great images and personal stories describe the various approaches to what a 'sacred place' is and the exercises at the end of each chapter are wonderful integration tools. I really like this book." -- Joyce Rupp --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and inspiring, August 31, 1999
By A Customer
Thanks to Robert Hamma and his book Landscapes of the Soul, which has helped me to look at the places in my life in a new way. In this book, the author suggests that there is no ordinary place, for the presence of the divine is everywhere, all we have to do is be attentive. Hamma encourages readers to listen, to smell, to taste, to touch, and to see, so that we might better develop a sense of place. Throughout the book the author shares some of his own experiences and explains how different places have had meaning in his life. But he also looks at cultural and religious traditions to see how place has had meaning throughout history. One great feature of this book is the exercises at the end of each chapter, which allow the reader time to reflect more personally on places in his or her life and what impact they have had. This book truly is full of insight and inspiration!

This book gives a decent sense of place, but the author ruined the book because it's so full of Christ-this and Christ-that. Enough already. The author doesn't even try to speak universally. A more accurate title would have been "Landscape of the Soul: Christian Places."
