Reflecting the book's title, von Trapp begins with detailed directions on grading the yard to control the flow of water. Following this are instructions on working the soil, creating a retaining wall, designing walkways, patios, decks, shade structures, and water gardens, and building fences. There are lists of plants suitable for growing in water gardens and along fences. There are also chapters on putting in a lawn and creating specialty gardens. These include perennial, container, rock, herb, vegetable, fruit, nut, and bulb gardens, with lists of appropriate plants for each. A final chapter--apparently aimed at gardeners with little or no skills--deals with hiring a landscape architect, designer, or contractor. Numerous black-and-white drawings and 175 color photographs complement the text.
