Great Resource,
By Maria James (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Landscaping with Native Plants of Texas (Paperback)
I love this book. I took it to the nursery with me to pick out my plants. I have started my native garden and all the plants are doing marvelously well- exactly as the book stated. I look forward to years of developing my Texas garden. I strongly recommend this book. I am a beginner gardener and really have no idea what I'm doing, but this book has helped me immensely.

There are some books that are more than good--they are fabulous. And what makes this one so great? Pictures! And the right pictures...this is how it really looks...in a typical "garen" or landscaped area. That's what makes this book so fabulous. The book shows you what it could look like, shows you variances, and then how to do it. Buy it!

The book provided the necessary information that allowed me to design a landscape butterfly garden for a local school project. It assisted in the selection of plants that both attract butterflies and provide food for their larva. The book was clear and comprehensive in the information provided.

Wow! What a fantastic reference book. I keep this book out all through the growing season and frequently check facts when I consider changing a plant out in my garden. The book has a lot of information pertaining to various growing regions of TX and that alone makes it a favorite of mine.
Each region has an assigned number and plants listed within the book are categorized as well, whether they are wildflowers, shrubs, groundcovers, trees, and so on. So if you're living in an area numbered 4 but you're searching for a certain plant with specific characteristics, you'd need to look for that plant and see if it will grow in your area. It's amazingly easy to use as a reference book and the photos are very nicely done too so you'll know what you'll be getting if your plant grows to maturity. Successful gardening in TX is not always easy and if you're one of those who is adapting your landscape to year round water restrictions, this is a book that will help you through those transitions to a beautiful native TX landscape.

Really well organized book with good illustrations. Selecting the right plants here in North Texas is important because of the dry, widely variant climate. Considering the folks at the local Home Depot and Lowe's really do not have any expertise, in my experience, at properly recommending the right plants for our local conditions, this book is a tremendous asset! We need to plant a tree and this book gets very specific by zone, around Texas. Just the options among various Oak trees is great - some species while tolerant of our North Texas location are fine to plant, they are very susceptible to Oak Wilt disease and/or poor survivability in cold to hot drought conditions unless heavy irrigation is supplemented (no can do under water restrictions). By selecting one of the other recommended species we can avoid problems. The big box stores simply offer what they have in stock.
