Product Description

The CUB 8 is a brand new, all tube guitar amp with its roots fairly and squarely back in the very beginning of tube amp production. The design ethos behind the CUB amps is 'Small is Beautiful!' There are plenty of situations when small is king and having an amplifier like the CUB 8 allows you to get 'THAT' vintage sound. The CUB 8 features a classic single-ended Class A design, and is loaded with a single ECC83 in the pre amp section and a single 6V6GT in the output section generating 5 watts RMS of vintage tube tone. The CUB 8's control panel is simplicity personified - a tone control, a volume control, Hi and LO input and that's your lot. The CUB 8 houses an 8" Celestion driver. Using a CUB 8 is straightforward, plug in, dial in your tone and wind the volume up a little and the 6V6GT's respond in a bright, bouncy and brilliant fashion. Drive the output section harder and the increased 2nd and 3rd order harmonics give the tone a pronounced bottom end and a lovely lower mid.

Buy if you meet these conditions:
- You are buying this for novelty alone or because Tony Iommi used Laney (as I did)
- You heard rumors that Page recorded all the original albums using a low wattage tube amp (5W) but he probably had high end stuff.
- You understand that even with a 4x12 extension cabinet this is barely, I mean barely loud enough over the drums!
- You don't intend to use this for rock or metal in a live situation (as my previous point), might be ok for acoustic!
- The tone knob is a joke! You only have 2 knobs: Vol and Tone. You may not find it too helpful you really need a (lo,mid, hi)!!!
- This is great, I mean great for low volumes but if you turn it up it sounds like crap (like all cheap amps)
- You will get a good bluesy or brit tone at low volumes. Great for recording I suppose!
- This amp is highly overrated and grossly overpriced. $200? Really? I can buy a 2x12 fender 100w combo that will actually play over a band for this price.
- You might not record a whole album with this thing and release it for world domination!

My final verdict: I have decided to keep this overpriced amp purely for the tube novelty and hoping that it'll come in handy for recording.

I have three other amps... a peavey audition plus, a vox vt30, and a roland microcube. Comparing them all to the Laney Cub 8 is like comparing apples and oranges because the Laney Cub 8 has two tubes and a superior speaker but no special effects. But, My favorite tone by far is the Laney Cub 8. It is like that vintage long lost Fender tone that is hard to find now a days.

This amp is very clean, articulate, and sounds really amazing with a chimey but full sound. The amp has great tubes and a 8 inch Celestion Super 8 speaker which is an outstanding deal for the price. There are two switches tone and volume which go to 10. I always play on volume - 1 and tone - 1 and the sound is still very loud - filling up my whole apartment and spilling into the hallways. For gigs you can just hook this up to an 8 ohm cabinet and blast the socks off of people!

I seriously recommend this product if you are practicing at home, doing small gigs, or making music in the studio. If you are even thinking about getting this amp... just do it.

I took a chance on this amp based on several positive reviews I read about it. Since receiving it, I've tried it with several different speakers, tubes, and guitars (both single coils and humbuckers), and I have not been able to get any tone out of it that doesn't sound terrible to my ears. It sounds harsh, raspy, and boxy no matter what I do to it. I know it only has an 8" speaker, but I've owned several other amps with 8" speakers that sounded good. I'm donating it to Goodwill this afternoon.
