Langenscheidt is always reliable no matter what the language, but, as a German company, you'd expect their German dictionary to be supreme. This one doesn't disappoint. I've lived in Germany and Austria and I can count on one hand the number of times I couldn't find a legitimate word in this dictionary. It even includes such Austrian (i.e. non-standard) words like 'Marille' (apricot) and 'Obers' (cream) and is loaded with phrases I haven't been able to find in any other dictionaries like 'sich um des Kaisers Bart streiten' (to squabble over little things).
Besides a 700-page dictionary this book also includes lists of irregular verbs, abbreviations (in German and English), geographical and historical names (also in German and English), musical works and numerals. At the beginning there is a pronounciation guide and in the middle there is a handy weight and measure conversion chart.
A necessity for anyone studying German.

Langenscheidt foreign language dictionarys are simply superior. They provide all the ESSENTIAL information when learning/using a foreign language. I'm surprised with the book nearly every time I open it. A great learning tool.

Out of a sea of options for German-English dictionaries, Langensheidt has always set the standard for clarity, breadth, and depth. This book should be the cornerstone of your German library. Excellent for college / high school students.

For work and for fun, I have consulted dictionaries in several languages, every day, it seems, for 15 years. If there is one thing I am qualified to write a review on, it's dictionaries.

I found the English-to-German half of the Langenscheidt New College dictionary to be shockingly unhelpful. For example, I tried to find the translation of "move" as in "move house". Under the entry for "move", there is a long list of German equivalents, but without any indication of which one suits which context. Which German word in the long list I'm staring at means "move" as in emotionally moving, move my car, move to a new city or move over? The dictionary gives no indication. I'd have to look up all the 50-some German verbs listed to know for sure!

Good modern dictionaries are very good about guiding people to the right word for the context. This one is not. The publishers must know there is a problem, but don't want to invest in an update. If you want help expressing yourself in German, don't buy this dictionary. I'm returning mine.

In the dictionary's defence, the German to English section seems adequate. I wonder if that is what the other, positive reviewers are focusing on. (A later note: the full-size Langenscheidt seemed to be in better shape. But for mid-size, take a look at the Oxford-Duden, too.)

Very comprehensive dicitionary, covers many idiomatic expressions (as well as dirty words). The section in the back on German language reforms is especially helpful.

I have had several German dictionaries over the last forty years. This one is the best I have owned and used. Often I want a technical term for some specific field or other. Generally I find it in this volume. I am very pleased with it.

This dictionary is dated 1995 and does not reflect the latest spelling reforms. A new edition is badly needed. I'm returning my copy.

I was very pleased with the Langenscheidt dictionary Leedysbooks sent my way. It is in excellent condition, was received very quickly and has virtually every word that I have needed for theological reading, which is quite a specialized area of vocabulary. I have not been disappointed.
