I have been looking for a good Vietnamese dictionary for a long time, and have finally found it in Langenscheidt's Vietnamese dictionary. This dictionary has the benefit of both northern and southern pronunciation, which is rare due to the fact that most textbooks and dictionaries only give the northern pronunciation. If you are studying Vietnamese, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Like other Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionaries, this Vietnamese dictionary has a lot of entries and plenty of vocabulary, with concise, clear definitions. Pretty good dictionary - tone markings are also clearly shown. This is probably one of the best deals you can get on concise Vietnamese dictionaries here on Amazon.com

The Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary Vietnamese is excellent to have in hand. I would recommend to those who want to be able to communicate or understanding the meaning of English speaker or Vietnamese speaker then you would want to buy this pocket dictionary. Because it provides detail guideline, explanation to the meaning, useful tool for everyday language. The great part about Langenscheidt editions also available other languages such as chinese, japanese, spanish, french, latin, english, etc...

I have a dozen Viet-English & English-Viet dictionaries and I like this one the best. The printing is easy to read with the headwords in blue and the definition on black. There are pronunciation keys at the bottom of each page. There are alternate meanings and antonyms for many of the entries. This dictionary was written for people trying to learn Vietnamese, it is a decoding dictionary. There are examples to help understand the meaning and use of the Vietnamese words. It is not a hundred-thousand-word boat anchor but more of a translation aid. It has a rugged, waterproof cover that will serve you well in the humidity of Viet Nam. I would've gladly given $100 for this dictionary ten years ago when I first started my study of the Vietnamese language.

I am a ESL teacher and tutor 5 Vietnamese students. Four out of 5 ordered this dictionary for themselves. The reason I did not rate this with 5 stars is that some useful words were not found in this dictionary. When I visited Vietnam next year I am considering taking some along to share with my host families.

I really don't know why this book received so many good reviews. I was unable to find many basic words.

I love this dictionary ... my Vietnamese friends love it...
What else can I say. I am traveling to Saigon for the first time in 35 years. This book will come with me (actually, 1 of my 2 copies..hehe).

The definitions are great. It's compact. Nice Binding. I like it.

Although not all words can be found in this dictionary, it's pretty adequate, esp. for beginners.
