This review is from: Langenscheidt's Standard Spanish Dictionary : Spanish/English English/Spanish (Hardcover)
I learned Spanish from the ground up in about 6 years. I now speak and read Spanish fluently and comfortably. I have tried many dictionaries along the way, including this one. Here's the scoop. The binding is durable (it makes a difference), and the dictionary has a decent selection of words and examples, but it really lacks the core information that would give the student an understanding of how the words relate to the grammar. It reads like a pocket dictionary, but it is rather impractical to carry around (it is a short, squat, heavy book). THE Spanish/English dictionary to have on the shelf is the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. It is throrough, easily understood, and it documents regional variations well. After I finish reading an entry for a word in the Oxford Spanish Dictionary, I truly feel that I understand how the word should be used. It is the ultimate reference dictionary for Spanish, and at $, it is well worth the buy. If you want a portable dictionary, I recommend either Langensheidt's pocket dictionary for its durability and portability (it has a soft, plastic cover and it actually fits into a pocket), or Webster's New World Spanish Dictionary. I believe that Webster's only comes in paperback, which is roughly the size of a paperback novel, but it should weather well, and it is an excellent dictionary. Oddly enough, even though the Oxford Spanish Dictionary is the best large dictionary, Webster's is much better than Oxford when it comes to small dictionaries.

The only real advantage to this dictionary is its Plastic cover, which makes it portable and water-resistant. Other than that, it is only confusing and innacurate. Allright for beginners, I would not recommend it for anyone who can actually *speak* spanish.

I have used many dictionaries in my studies of Spanish, but only a few have I used consistently. This is a standard in dictionaries. It not only helps to translate, but also helps to choose the right word. Along with Mierda and Mas Mierda, no true library would be complete to learn and read Spanish. Hasta Luego.
