5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect travel companion
This mini dictionary is only slightly larger than a box of cigarettes. Its soft plastic cover is extremely pliable and withstands the challenges of frequent pocket wear very well.

The same is true for the binding. Where other pocket dictionaries couldn't take the abuse of being worn in front or back pockets for extended periods of time, this little beauty holds up...

Langenscheidt has always been a name I trust when it comes to German dictionaries, but I was very disappointed with this particular one. I bought it because of its small size to take with me on a recent trip to Germany, but I was continually frustrated when I would look for a word and not find it! And these were not, in my opinion, obscure words. I finally went into a book store in Regensburg, Germany and bought a larger edition, still small enough to carry around, but much more complete with around 137,000 words! I left the smaller one with my sister-in-law for her to use with her grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect travel companion, April 22, 2003

This mini dictionary is only slightly larger than a box of cigarettes. Its soft plastic cover is extremely pliable and withstands the challenges of frequent pocket wear very well.

The same is true for the binding. Where other pocket dictionaries couldn't take the abuse of being worn in front or back pockets for extended periods of time, this little beauty holds up perfectly well, just like its previous edition.

While the 35,000 references provided in this dictionary will not be sufficient as a foundation for a professional translator or interpreter, this travel companion is perfect for business trips as well as leisurely vacations.

4.0 out of 5 stars small and compact, a true pocket dictionary, January 25, 2008
By

I bought this dictionary to replace a defective Langenscheidt's Pocket Dictionary. The size is nice as it is easier to carry around, and I like the plastic cover and blue headwords. I am an intermediate German student and so far I have found every word I was looking for. The only thing I don't like is that, unlike the pocket dictionary,it doesn't have the blue tabs for each section of the alphabet, which makes looking up several words faster. But don't be fooled, this one would actually fit in your pocket, unlike the actual pocket dictionary, which is bigger. The size of this one reminds me of the old Lilliput ones Langenscheidt used to make.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy to use and comprehensive, February 25, 2003
This review is from: Langenscheidt's Universal German Dictionary: German-English English-German (English and German Edition) (Paperback)
This book covers all the basic vocabulary of both languages, English and German - and this is much more people usually use to communicate. Thus it helps you in almost every everyday situation and is also good for quick reference when reading books. Due to it's size it can be transported easily and taken everywhere. Because it combines both translation directions, it can be used in order to understand others and to express oneself.
If you need more translation power, phrases, collocations etc., you will need a bigger one, but this here is good for a start, and even for a little more.

4.0 out of 5 stars learning German, September 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In an effort to read and chat German online with friends in video games, I purchased this book as desk referance. A friend from Germany has the same book and recomended it to me. I also run online translators in the background during our game sessions which are much faster. But i still like having this book close buy and i use it frequently

I've always loved their dictionaries. Amazing quality. HOWEVER, if I were to criticize, it would be that they made the overall shape too 'cubish' -great for sitting on a desk, but HORRIBLE for one's pocket. Cute as hell, though. Just make note of the proportions before you buy.

This review is from: Langenscheidt's Universal German Dictionary: German-English English-German (English and German Edition) (Paperback)
I am shopping for a English-German/German-English dictionary and I am not buying this one. The reason: I couldn't find a single piece of information about this book, except for the number of pages. How many entries does it have? What about the structure? What kind of cover - plastic of paper? Well, they dont want me to know, I dont want to buy.
