Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is the book on language and gender we have all been waiting for." Janet Holmes, Victoria Univeristy, Wellington, author of Women, Men, and Politeness

Book Description

This is a new introduction to the study of the relation between gender and language use, written by two of the leading experts in the field. It covers the main topics, beginning with a clear discussion of gender and of the resources that the linguistic system offers for the construction of social meaning. The body of the book offers an unprecedentedly broad and deep coverage of the interaction between language and social life. It is set to become the standard textbook for courses on language and gender.

I ordered this book for a course I am taking. The approach to gender as something we DO everyday is especially enlightening. The authors' upfront revelation of not claiming to be objective is especially refreshing. The text is packed with information about gendering acts and how to be aware of our programming to become part of the heterosexual marketplace.
