Our Babel explained by Brilliant Burgess,
By Shalom Freedman "Shalom Freedman" (Jerusalem,Israel) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Language Made Plain, (Paperback)
Burgess says his aim in the book is " to persuade the ordinary reader to be interested in those aspects of language which are closest to his own needs, especially the need of finding a painless way into the learning of foreign tongues'. But in the course of this work he gives a general analysis of Language, of its sounds in action and sounds in space, of its bangs ,hisses and buzzes, of its flutes and lutes, of the adventures of an alphabet, of its words, sentences, and of the science of linguistics. He also in the second part of the book talks about the learning of foreign languages, language families, the tongue of the British, Learning Teutonic Languages, learning the daughter languages of Latin, learning Malay, creating artificial languages which will 'break Babel'. This book is rich with information on many different aspects of our use of language, and is written with the usual Burgessian brilliance.
