Buy this book if you want to really learn your medical terms,
By Terri Stroh (Circleville, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Language of Medicine: A Write-In Text Explaining Medical Terms (Book with CD-ROM) (Paperback)
I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

A Medical Student's Opinion,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Language of Medicine: A Write-In Text Explaining Medical Terms (Book with CD-ROM) (Paperback)
Throughout my first year of med school I was always looking for a logical way to remember all of the terms we needed to learn. I looked for a lot of books that were similar to this one but this one is by far the best. It gives you a very straightforward way to look at medical terms. For instance, sialadenectomy means removal of the salivary gland. How do I know this? -ectomy means removal, sial means salivary, aden means gland. Trust me you will find a lot of other words that have sial, aden, and ectomy in them and you will be able to figure out what they mean. There are so many more examples that I don't want to bother going into them. Basically if you memorize the 1000 or so medical root words that are presented in this book, you will probably have mastery of over 30,000 medical terms.I used this book between my first and second year of med school. I would recommend other med school students to do this as well. This book would be very time consuming to go through if you had minimal knowledge of the human body. I would say it would take someone an entire month (4-5 hours a day) to go through this book well if they don't know anything about medicine. It should take a med student a total of 50 hours if they have already gone through their basic science years. Additionally, I always thought the exercises in the back of each chapter were too extensive and repetitive. But I also think too much is better than too little. The CD contains a glossary like the back of the book. The glossary is an excellent source that really can be used throughout one's medical training. I think our med school should have a 2 week course teaching this book. It would make life much easier.

A Great Medical Terminology Text Gets Even Better!,
By Laura A. Clark (Central Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Language of Medicine: A Write-In Text Explaining Medical Terms (Book with CD-ROM) (Paperback)
In the sixth revision of The Language of Medicine Davi-Ellen Chabner updates an already comprehensive medical terminology book. Even the colors are high energy! From the cover colors to those used in photos and diagrams, it is a pleasure to review. From a learner's perspective, TLOM has it all. Chabner wants the learner to understand medical terminology not just learn it by rote memorization. In-text exercises with answers are offered as well as a CD which offers questions, answers, photos, video clips, pronunciation of terms and more. The welcome Instructor's Manual has been updated and expanded for educators. There is even a Web site which benefits both students and instructors with loads of material and the opportunity to have two-way communication. Medical terminology touches the lives of all of us. In the pursuit of life-long learning, The Language of Medicine would be beneficial for everyone's reference collection.Note to Editors: I had previously written a review for the fifth edition of The Language of Medicine. The above is written specifically for the sixth edition. Could you substitute it, please? Thanks!
