A beautiful novel,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Language of Sisters (Mass Market Paperback)
This book touched me in so many ways that I almost find it hard to put it into words. Ms. Yurk illustrated the relationship between the two sisters so eloquently, when I was reading I almost felt like I was intruding on the bond that they shared. But at the same time I felt such warmth at being given the gift of being a part of something so special. Read this novel, and you will be rushed with feelings of sadness and grief, yet happiness and excitement all at the same time.

A worthy effort,
This review is from: The Language of Sisters (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is about two sisters and it appears to have been written by two authors. The first, who begins the story and sucks in the reader with good, descriptive writing, tells the complicated tale of the older sister, Nicole, facing the rape and ensuing pregnancy of her severely handicapped and institutionalized sister, Jenny.Returning home after ten years and choosing to stay and care for Jenny during the last four months of her pregancy, has Nicole facing her dysfunctional past and an uncertain and frightening future. And during this stage of the story I feel the writing loses its grasp. The dialog is pat and once full characters become flat and predictible. Nevertheless, I was interested in the characters and hoped for a writing rebound. So, I stayed with it for the story rather than the writing. Happy to reach a satisfying conclusion, I deemed the reading experience worth my time. I think this book may find its strongest audience with those who have lived with a retarded sibling (in this case a MUST read) or have in some way been attached to someone suffering from extreme disabilities where unspoken communication comes into play. I intend to read Amy Yurk's first novel, The Kind of Love That Saves You, because I believe she has talent and am interested in her work. Thank you for the opportunity to review The Language of Sisters.

I'm Buying it for Christmas Gifts!,

This review is from: The Language of Sisters (Mass Market Paperback)
I sure hope Amy Yurk is working on her third novel, because I loved this one. I think The Language of Sisters is the perfect gift for anyone with family issues because of a sibling who took an inordinate amount of family energy because of illness, disability, substance abuse or behavior problems. It really provides food for thought in an entertaining and yet heart-wrenching way. Whew. What a story!

I enjoyed this story so much; Ms. Yurk tells a beautiful, difficult story in such a way that doesn't elicit sympathy, nor is apologetic, given the subject matter I feel this shows incredible talent from Ms. Yurk as a story teller.Having a close friend who had a sibling with special needs growing up, and my own daughter having a friend with a sister diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, I can particularly relate to and appreciate the subject matter. However, even without those connections this story is a compelling read. I can not wait to read Ms. Yurk's first novel (The Kind of Love that Saves You) which I am expecting delivery of any day now, as well as the upcoming release of her third. In this story, the ending was especially satisfying for me, many times it seems authors will rush the ending, leaving a quick, predictable ending; there is expectation with this story, however I didn't feel a rushed feeling from either the author or from me, as the reader, I was definitely not wanting the story to' just end already'. This is a wonderful story told by a talented writer, I am thankful for the experience of reading it.

This was my first novel by Yurk, I happen to love NAL Accent books. It was full of emotion. A great story about "making right" any wrongs you think you've committed. A perfect women's fiction book. If you like any of the NAL Accent books you'll love this one too.I'm only sad...it seems Ms. Yurk isn't around?! It doesn't appear her website is up and running. I hope she's still writing, becuase she did a great job on this one.

The New Revalation of Sisterhood with a cherry on top,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Language of Sisters (Mass Market Paperback)
Amy Yurk writes a good tale of what it is like to care for a disabled young women. When she writes about the kinship of sisterhood is displayed through Nicole and Jenny's relationship with tto put heir mother. The book had me on the verge of my seat. I wanted to stay up all night reading because the words create a firing sensation and the only way to put the fire out is by completing the book. I personally recomensd this book to young women who have sisters. This book opened a great oppertunity for me to want to help other people the way Nicole helped Jenny get through difficult times. Love it!!!!!!!!!!
