Format: Paperback
I bought this book thinking to learn something about sociolinguistics and its related fields--this operation was a resounding success. I found Downes's writing style felicitous but his explanation of some points less clear than that of some other writers I have read subsequently ... particularly the section on illocutionary acts was a bit opaque. Did the job fine, though, as a textbook should.

Format: Paperback
For a book on sociolinguistics it is great. For someone in the field of language instruction this will be an indispensible reference for developing knowledge in sociolinguistics and even discourse analysis to some extent.

It's a technical book. I mean that it is not a Tannen or a NY Times Pinker like read and it will require some exertion - therefore recommend this more as an academic resource. For this purpose (its intention) it is ideal.
