This is a review for the Lanikai S-T Spruce Series Tenor Ukulele .

Basic features:
-Scale Length: 17.25" (Tenor size)
-Width at Nut: 35mm
-18 frets on rosewood fretboard.
-Solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides.
-Maple binding.
-Geared tuners.

Note: I did not purchase this uke from Amazon. I was asked by a friend (who bought it through Amazon) to try this uke for a while, and to see how it compares to the rest of my herd. Though I cannot compare it to my solid wood ukes, I compared it to a similar uke. Specifically, I tested how it held up against my other spruce top tenor ukes, a Kala KA-ST and a Lanikai S-TEQ. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the packaging, since it was delivered to my friend. She assured me that it was packaged decently.

First impression, its looks are pleasing to the eye. The finish is mostly nice and clean on the outside, there were no major blemishes, and the build seems solid enough. Inside the soundhole, there was a significant degree of carelessness (excess glue in many areas of the bindings, a small piece of wood that I can't seem to figure out where it dislodged from, etc.). The problem spots were not visible and did not seem to affect the sound. This may just be from this one uke, but I still had to mention it.

There was no buzzing at all. The frets were mostly nice and polished (the second and third frets had some marks that I polished out myself). It came with Aquilla Nylgut strings, and the action was a bit higher than I anticipated, but still playable. After a week, I adjusted the saddle to lower the action a tad. I checked the intonation, and the strings were acceptable. The 1st and 3rd strings were at least 20 cents flat on the 12th fret.

I've had my Lanikai LU-21 Soprano Ukulele for about six months now, and I'm still pretty impressed with the quality of that little instrument, given how little I paid for it. Not long ago I decided to get a tenor uke to compliment it, and I thought it would be nice to get a ukulele with a solid top this time, if it wasn't too expensive.

I looked at the various tenors available from Amazon and other vendors, and this one jumped right out at me. It was the least expensive tenor with a solid top, and being a Lanakai, it comes with Aquia Nylgut strings. I ordered it, and it arrived this morning. (If you haven't tried Nylgut strings yet- let me assure you that they're fantastic. Much beter than plain nylon. I have them not only on my ukes, but on my fretless banjo as well, and I'm ordering a few sets for my classical guitar)

In comparison with the laminate top LU-21, the solid top S-T is significant louder, and has a much richer tone. The longer neck is easier to play, and of course the tenor is the favorite size uke of ukulele virtuosos past and present like Lyle Ritz and Jake Shimabukuro. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I bought this tenor after owning a slightly cheaper laminate-topped Kala (which was kind of dull sounding), several solid wood sopranos, and a Flea. I also did a lot of side by side sound tests with much more expensive ukes at my regional ukulele meetings, before deciding. I had a friend with the Kala version, and it always beat the other ukes in sides, by sides. I choose the Lanikai version simply because it was virtually the same uke as the Kala, but about $30 cheaper.

In my opinion this spruce topped Lanikai is one of the best bargains on the market if you measure it by sound for the dollar. Its loud but nice sounding. Intonation was spot on straight from a big box store and its a joy to hold and play.

Although I have been happy with everything I have bought from Amazon, I cannot comment on the packaging from Amazon on this one. I bought mine heavily discounted as a Sam Ash floor model, so I never saw the box. I suspect it was just hung on the wall straight from the box, but I have never had to adjust the action on this one.

Ordered this uke when I was in rehab. It arrived in good condition, beautiful finish. Set up nicely. Strings were Aquila, so they needed a good stretching/settling in session. The spruce top gives this uke a sweet tone that projects well, clear and with little clunkieness. When I got home, I compared its sound to a few of my other ukes, and I have to say solid wood really makes a difference. I will always love my Kala mahogany soprano, but the Lanikai just seems to speak a bit clearer. This is a fairly nice intermediate ukulele. Get one.

I bought this for myself, it arrived on Christmas Eve and it's about the best Christmas present I've ever received (sorry mom and dad). I've now had it almost three months and hardly a day goes by when I don't pick it up. I work with incarcerated boys. It's noticeable how strumming this thing calms them -and me- down quite a bit. I'm looking to purchase the LU-21 Tenor in that so many of these guys want to learn how to play the ukulele too (this one is my baby and I'm hesitant to share it with them). I'm really glad I bought this thing.

This is a review for the Lanikai S-T Spruce Series Tenor Ukulele. This uke has a beautiful loud rich tone and great action. It plays every bit as well as tenor ukes costing 2 or 3 times as much. The finish is beautiful and the quality of the hardware is first rate. It even comes with Aquila strings which, once they are broken in, hold their tuning better than other strings and have that brilliant "ring" that we all look for. I changed out the standard G string for an Aquila low G and it sounds even richer. All in all a great value for a great instrument.
