No leaks here...,

This review is from: Lansinoh 20435 Breastmilk Storage Bags, 25-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) (Health and Beauty)
I have found these bags to be the best ones out there. They are thicker mm of plastic, have a double seal and a separate area to write on to avoid ink contamination. In my opinion, they are also much easier to pour to/from than other brands.
I also appreciate how they lay flat for more space-efficient storage. They have held up very well in my deep freeze in arctic temperatures! I have used approximately 2,000 bags (seriously) and I have had only 9 that leaked. While I was sorry to lose those bags, I consider 9/2,000 to be pretty impressive odds. These are more expensive than other ones out there, but I will pay that price to store my "liquid gold"! If you are continually having difficulty with leaking bags, make sure you are freezing no more than 6 ounces at a time. Even though it looks like it will hold more, the milk will expand in the freezer. Also, you may want to freeze smaller quantities of milk so that there is less waste. You want to ensure that your baby will drink all that you defrosted, rather than having to discard it. I found it helpful to freeze some amounts in larger quantities, like 4 or 6 ounces and then smaller "top off" amounts for 2 or 3 ounces. Smaller amounts also less time to thaw...although this means you will use more bags. Also, don't drop them once they are frozen, which can also contribute to leaks.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Lansinoh bags but THIS SPECIFIC ORDER here in Amazon is NOT the same quality as the bags you buy in the store but they are Lansinoh. The box is a lighter purple, bags are thinner and have a flower design not the mother design. HOWEVER.....if you look at the date on the bottom of the boxes, the ones in the store that are thicker with the mother picture were produced in 2007, these here were made in 2010. If you go to the Lansinoh website and look at the bags they advertise, are the ones with the flower design sold here. I am disappointed that Lansinoh reduced the quality of their bags because I favored them above all the others. Amazon needs to update the picture to the actaul product they are sending out.

Favorite bags,

These are my favorite bags. I originally had the Medela bags because I thought they would be easier (you can pump directly into those). I found that I didn't like pumping into the bags because I couldn't get a good measure at the end. I have tried the easy pour bags also, and they were not really that 'easy'.
I like these because they have two seals. And I have found them cheaper than the Medelas.

Haven't had a problem with leaks so far. Make sure you don't drop them after they are frozen.
I did notice an odor with the first few bags of milk in my stash, but that may have been because they were kept in the fridge for a few days before freezing. Baby has not had any objections to the rest of the milk thus far. If you do notice an odor, it may be a problem with your breast milk having an excess of a certain enzyme (or something ... check out the breastfeeding sites for more info.) Just to be on the safe side on avoiding possible odors, I have been storing them in batches of 10 or 12 bags in a bigger ziploc freezer bag. Freeze them by laying them flat (make sure you seal the bags well.) That will make them super easy to thaw. The best indicator I have that these bags are great is that my husband likes them and has no complaints about them :-)

How to deal with leaks...,

Overall, I am very pleased with this product. They are easier to fill than the Medela bags and the cost is reasonable. Like many of the other reviewers, I have had several bags that leaked. I called the manufacturer using the 1-800 number on the bag. They reminded me not to overfill the bags and actually sent me a package of bags as a replacement. They don't leak when you put the milk in, only during the thawing process (which tells me that something about freezing and thawing causes the leaks to spring up in the plastic). To manage this, I thaw the bags inside a quart sized ziploc bag. The ziploc bag catches any leaked milk and I don't loose anything. Very happy with the product and will continue to purchase throughout my nursing experience. I don't think double bagging is necessary, but I would suggest using a safety net (ziploc bag) in the thawing process to prevent any loss of milk from leaks.

1/3 - 1/2 of my bags leak,

After reading the positive reviews and the fact that I would be able to store them easily flat and that my local store always had them in stock, I switched to these from the Medela brand with my second baby. I hardly used any frozen ones while I was still pumping and exclusively breastfeeding, but now that I have stopped and thawed almost all of my over 100 bags of frozen milk, I have to report that at least about 1/3 to 1/2 of them leaked. It's a messy business trying to save the precious milk and nearly impossible to save it all out of bag with a leak. It was not at the seal as another reviewer noted, it seemed to be the bag itself, usually at the bottom. Maybe it was because I filled all of them to the max. of 6 oz ... but since that is what they were made for, it should not have happened. I also found that they are much harder to stand up then the Medela ones, but I guess that's the price you pay for flat storage .... If you don't want to risk that these leak, I recommend not filling them with the 6 oz and/ or switching to the Medela bags where I hardly ever had one that leaked.

UGH! Leaks when thawed,
By G & Z's mom (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews

I had over 200 bags of milk stored in these bags only to find that nearly 50% of the milk was lost due to leaking bags.
Consider the hours you spent pumping and the fact that 50% of the milk will be wasted before you buy these bags. There has to be a better brand out there! The seams in these bags just come apart after defrosting and there's no way to tell if a bag will stay intact. The past 3 or 4 times the milk defrosted fine but after a few hours in the fridge the seam came apart. I am SO FRUSTRATED and would never recommend these.

My wife read a lot of reviews and came to these bags. She used all the advice she got online to store her breastmilk.
First she would never put more than 5 ounces in a bag. She actually think putting less would be better because if you put in 5 ounces and lay it flat, it kinda slopes so it's harder to stack the next bag on top after it is frozen. Second she freeze them flat and then stack them in plastic take out containers. You need a lot of these but I wouldn't run out and buy any. We have them from takeout food (mainly chinese) and have just washed them. Now she has moved onto double bagging zip lock bags. She hasn't defrosted a whole lot from that batch, so she hopes they don't leak. Third, Use a sharpie black pen to write on the ends, it works the best vs using a pen. Fourth, she uses a long cup to help her keep the bag up when she is pouring the milk out of her bottles from pumping. They defrost fast which is a plus for us but it does get to be a pain to see the labels when you put them in storage containers. She's used the Medela bottles which are even better but when she starts pumping more milk you need to move to bags. We also got the Medela bags from the hospital which she hates because they don't store as much and then they are really awkward for her to use. I watched her struggle to tape them to her pump and then she was stressed out that it would fall apart while she was pumping. The subscription is perfect so she's not constantly worried about running out. The double zip feature is great for extra security and the bags are supposedly thicker and best of all BPA free!

My Bags Leak!,
By
This review is from: Lansinoh 20435 Breastmilk Storage Bags, 25-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) (Health and Beauty)
I have gotten these through the Amazon Mom's Subscribe and Save and have half a deep freezer full of frozen milk in these bags. Now that my daughter is in MDO and drinking out of a bottle more I have just started using the frozen bags on a regular basis. THEY LEAK!!! Not good! I have started cutting the bags of to thaw them milk in a tupperware bowl after having lost several ounces due to them leaking all over the fridge. I think after I finish using the batch that I have I am going to switch brands even if they are a little more expensive.

BEWARE! Thinner plastic and MAGGOTS.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lansinoh 20435 Breastmilk Storage Bags, 25-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) (Health and Beauty)
I ordered these because I'd used the Lansinoh bags before and liked them, and because it was such a great deal. I haven't had any problems with leaking, but I do have two pretty major complaints:
1. The box I opened today had a MAGGOT IN IT. I found a little nest in the cardboard of the box, and a healthy-sized maggot was...exploring. The bag that holds the milk bags was sealed tight and I didn't find anything inside it. But a maggot?!?!? 2. I have a sneaking suspicion these bags are such a great deal because they're quite old. The boxes are bent at the edges and have a different design than boxes of these bags you pick up at the drug store. The plastic is also noticeably thinner. Like I said, I used them anyway and haven't had a problem, but this offer is egregiously misleading. Because of those two problems, I won't be ordering these again. It's really too bad because I'm super broke, but maggots are not ok. |
