Editorial Reviews

Meditative but heaving with energy, Son Lux's third full-length weaves disparate elements into songs both strange and welcoming. On the heals of being named NPR's "Best New Artist of the Year", Son Lux created an album that sits as comfortably next to the compositions of Stravinsky, John Adams, David Lang and Ben Frost, as it does to those of Jamie Lidell, Björk, Flying Lotus, and Radiohead.

Both lovely and strange, “Lanterns” is difficult to describe, but very easy to enjoy.

I stumbled into Ryan's last album and spent a solid month just taking in. This record is no different. That said, you'll need to take your time to really get what's going on here.

Musically it's complex, intelligent, but totally pleasing and enjoyable for anyone. Just like the last record it's strewn with a seamless mix of electronic and classical instruments. It differs though in that there's a noticeably more dominate use of electronic sounds, and beautiful use of some female vocals.

Don't be put off by the word "electronic" here. You're not getting into a dance track lacking musical depth; you're getting into a symphony crafted in an expansive and lucid way.

Again like last time you'll find yourself humming a few of his catchy melodies and spending a few extra minutes in your car to finish each track. There's so much value you a in record like this. Lyrics that get you thinking along spiritual lines and songs that won't grow old by next month. I really can't recommend "Lanterns"--and Son Lux in general--highly enough.

New York City artist Ryan Lott returns with his third album—happy-strange electronic music with
choral and classical prog-pop elements. Atmospheric, avant-indie experimental smile vibrations.
Epic, multi-directional songs that float through the clouds with a distinctive celestial peculiarity.
Music that often seems infused with chaotic bits & pieces, but always manages to project a
cohesive, beckoning aura of sound. There’s a freshness in the soft-to-startling beauty of the
songs that opens their complex nature for easy absorption. Sometimes it sounds like the softer
bits of David Lynch or Foetus shuffled about with Grizzly Bear, Gazelle Twin, Radiohead, Books,
Sigur Ros. Strings, horns, big percussion and an overall orchestral feel meld seamlessly with
eclectic electro-pop to create a sophisticated, surreal soundscape that’s hauntingly attractive.
Both lovely and strange, “Lanterns” is difficult to describe, but very easy to enjoy.

This is one album I can listen to again and again and notice new things each time. Ryan Lott is a truly original artist. These songs get inside you, whether you're playing them as background music or hanging on every note. Brilliant and immensely enjoyable.

Really great vinyl but this was labeled "limited edition" and I reckon the limited edition vinyls should be dipped and what not. But when my brother bought this for me here and just received it today I opened it up really stoked to see the vinyl but really bummed out that my vinyl was plain black. Nothing limited edition about it:/ but I won't rate this album lower because of that!

A hypnotic blend of sounds, beautiful, digital and traditional all mixed into one. I loved it from the first listen.

When I first hear "lost it to trying", my brain melted. I loved that song so dearly and still do, but then "easy" was released and I assumed that was about all the worthwhile content. Dang. I was so dumb. I heard "no crimes" when I got my VIP vinyl in the mail and I lost my mind. I haven't been able to stop listening to the whole album, but that song is like my favorite ever. Thanks Son Lux and Joyful Noise Recordings for putting out this masterpiece.
