Book Description

January 31, 1994
Widely praised in hardcover and now available in paperback, this comedy of contemporary Manhattan manners has all the panache of a Preston Sturges film and many of the trappings: a blue-blooded heiress, a handsome young artist, ladies who lunch and men who drink, not to mention trust funds, social climbers, and Christie's auctions galore.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Moneyed Manhattanites, the most frequent targets of Hamilton's barbed cartoons in the New Yorker , also form the cast of his third novel, a mordantly funny portrayal of the war between the upwardly mobile and the already wealthy. When she meets talented, handsome artist Vincent Booth, Mary Brigham thinks she's discovered perfect husband material: he is sexy, caring and just bohemian enough to irritate her multimillionaire father. Best of all, Vincent doesn't care about her richesuntil they enter New York society as a couple. Growing restless in the museum job Mary has procured for him, Vincent begins an affair with Laura Montgomery, a chilly, amoral beauty, and discovers a way to make a fortune that isn't as foolproof as he thinks. While casting a sharp eye on the world of dinner parties, galas and illicit alliances, Hamilton offers thinly fictionalized, lightly venomous versions of certain networks, magazines, anchormen and museums that make for some entertaining guessing games. First serial to Cosmopolitan.

From Library Journal

Hamilton, caustic cartoonist for the New Yorker , satirizes patrons of the arts in this comic novel. Vincent Booth, a fair painter and competent art historian, marries bland heiress Mary Brigham so he can live with no worries and plenty of money. Naive about high society's schemers and sycophants, he's swindled by an unscrupulous curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Meanwhile, our hapless hero invests all his energy in a romance with the fickle daughter of a famous film director. The author gives amusing insights into New York's art and publishing worlds, and his story is as much fun as the best novels of Peter De Vries. Joyce Smothers, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J.
