I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He loved it. He treated it like gold. He hasn't even had it a month and the hinges have fallen apart. Like I said, he treated this thing VERY well. Its not like he's two and beat the thing up. I think with normal wear and tear the darn thing should last longer than a month. Without a doubt this is the worst thing I have EVER bought on Amazon.com. Don't waste your money.

The lap desk is of good quality and very comfortable to use. Only problem is the bracket that holds the top open broke the first time I even opened it. The screws just popped right out. I was shocked since it's not a cheap purchase.

I received this desk as a gift so I would have a nice lapdesk for my super hot running laptop.
It is sturdy, the laptop does not slide off, it had hiding places for your stuff. All in all really cool.
However, I found that if I had any external items plugged into the laptop (phone, external drive, etc) while there was great storage for the items inside the storage compartment there was no where to run the wires!
I decided I liked the desk enough to have my husband use a dremmel to cut a small crescent out of the top of the storage compartment dividers where simply having the lid closed hides the cut outs completely.
We found some stain in the garage that was so close to the original color of the desk it almost looks like it came with the cutouts.

It is now officially perfect.

Some people will find it a tad heavy once you add your laptop, but I don't. I love the old school pencil holder at the top.

Like other buyers found, this falls apart -- and all in the same way. The hinge is a complete design flaw and comes to pieces, making the desk unusable and just a nice looking box. In my instance, the firm did not even acknowledge my email query, which was bland and polite. The reply to my second a week later was a brushoff. The firm offers only a 30-day warranty -- a fact that is not apparent on the site. It does not seem in any way fazed by a consistent quality control problem. The desk is beautiful and I loved it but it is hit or miss in its manufacturing and/or assembly.

Mine lasted just 6 weeks during which the lid was opened and closed maybe 25 times. The product warranty is only 30 days. My complaint is not unique and the problem is clearly generic. The company seems content to leave it unresolved. Please read the other reviews. In most instances, the product is fine but there are enough failures to warn buyers off. The seller is fully aware of the hinge problem -- check the other 1-star ratings. It continues to market a defective item that it does not back up with a fair warranty -- 30 days!

I think a 1 star rating is too high for this company.

This is a beautiful piece and seems to be of good quality. I find it a little heavy for me (senior). My issue with it is that my first one came with a big staple right in the middle of the lid. I returned that one and asked for a replacement. The replacement came in with a scratch on the lid. I just kept it, rather than going through the trouble of returning it. So, if you want to give this as a gift or want a perfect item, beware.

As all the reviewers before me have stated, this product is not made very well. When I received it, I opened the lid and it fell apart! It wasn't even used yet! I am just going to fix it myself..it looks like the back is not glued in very well and they use these super thin pins that do not hold it together. The arm to hold up the top of the desk barely moves.

It is a nice idea, but poorly made. Based on the other reviews I think this is a hit or miss purchase, which I knew going in. I really wouldn't pay more than $20 for this, with the understanding that you will need to either fix it or reinforce it somehow.

Very disappointed, but sadly, not surprised.

The only thing I don't like is minor; the hinges for the lid show on top, they are not hidden underneath. This can cause scratches on my laptop computer. Other than that the quality is very nice, it is a good size and has a roomy compartment. I love it!

LAP GEAR SCHOOLHOUSE LAP DESK: Reviews for this product ranged wildly before I purchased mine (about 80% pro, 20% con) and I was a bit cautious about ordering it. Some reviews sounded fantastic, others very disappointed. I prefer to order when most reviews are 4 or 5 stars, and since the clear majority on this product WERE 4 or 5 stars, I did place an order. But that 20% of bad reviews did have me a bit worried. My lap desk arrived about 2 weeks ago, and I've been using it a lot since. Here's my experience thus far.

PACKAGE: First off, the package in which the desk arrived was entirely appropriate and there was no damage to either the wood or finish.

WOOD/FINISH: Both the wood used and the finish on this item were similar to the other wooden surface lap desk we own ... suitable to the task, but not OVERLY durable. This item was not designed to take abuse. If you take care of this item, it should last a good long time and look and perform great. If you play rough with it, it will show wear. I feel totally comfortable using my rubber footed laptop or a leather or paper journal on this surface. I would NOT use a wire spiral bound notebook on this surface without putting something underneath it. If I need/want to take notes in a wire notebook, I lay down a linen towel first to protect the finish. The FEEL of the item is very satisfying, but NOT heavy.

HINGES: The hinged lid opened just fine the first time, closed without difficulties, and has continued to do so since, with NO issues. The lid is not loosely mounted at all, it's all quite secure. BUT, the hinges used to mount the lid do allow for a little natural wiggle as there is play in the mechanism of the hinges themselves.
