5.0 out of 5 stars It's like Shudder To Think except more mellow and poppy!, November 24, 2006
This review is from: Lapland (Audio CD)
This is my favourite album from Craig Wedren. I like Pony Express and 50,000 B.C. very much but it all seems to come together with this album, 'Lapland'. Clearly Wedren is more 'loved-up' on this album than any of the Shudder To Think stuff. I mean, I couldn't imagine a lyric like "Scare the piss out of the bedpans" [Pony Express] appearing anywhere on this album - He seems to have mellowed out in a very respectable way. In other words, the songs haven't suffered in not having the usual edgy Shudder To Think approach. These songs are more conventional in their structure, to the point that I'd imagine that 'Do you harm' could be a hit if it were covered by a high-profile artist. That said, the songs do require repeated listening to 'get into' them. Wedren himself has a profile and singing style that do not lend themselves easily to daytime radio airplay.
The bottom line is that this is a great album and I haven't heard ANYTHING better in about a year or two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music from a famous movie scorer, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Lapland (Audio CD)
This guy is versitile. From Reno 911 soundtrack to School of Rock (with Jack Black -- GO "D"!!!!) he really knows how to mix pop up to give it an indie feel. Lapland has moments of ambience and moments of serious rockin'. A great fluid and cohesive piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Shudder, December 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lapland (Audio CD)
Beautiful Album. I've been following Craig since the 'Ten Spot' days of Shudder to think, bouncing around at 930 as a 17 year old, so I am certainly biased. Because of this, I feel like we've grown up together - from the Youthful naivete of 'voodoo spells' to the fully grown genius of Pony Express. This is a disk that we knew was going to get made at some point.

My wife won't touch any of my Shudder, but spins this disk obsessively - so something is different here. It's a reflective album about lost chances, dear jane, growing up and apart. It's not spastic, morose, or untouchable. It's just quiet and beautiful genius - somewhere between Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and Buckley's Grace (A comparison I am loathe to make - nobody should have dead prodigies as the yardstick for their work...) Smart, reflective, beautiful. Fifteen Minutes Late and Rain Diamonds are in my Wedren 'best of' playlist.

If you have ever 7th-grade slow-danced with your honey to 'All Eyes are Different' you already have this. Otherwise, you should give it a crack, knowing fully that the disk is probably not for you. But if it is...
