1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible product - be warned! November 9, 2010
I am an IT professional and bought this product aware of the bad reviews but with the hope that I could transfer some programs from Windows XP to Windows 7. I did succeed in this modest objective but with so much difficulty that I would rate this as one of the worst software products I have ever encountered. The instructions are poor, there are many pitfalls, a transfer can take many, many hours, and the transfer often aborts arbitrarily and has to be completely redone.

If you are as foolish as I was and buy this product here are some lessons. First, following the instructions you must load the software on the new computer, then on the old computer, and get it going. At this point do NOT TOUCH either machine. If you touch any key it will hang the transfer. I also discovered that any automatic process (like virus scanning, software updates, backups, screen savers, power saving mode) will also hang it. Make sure you disable all of these before you begin.

Next, you can get Windows 7 to network with Windows XP however this software will not see both machines. Do not use the network transfer method - the only thing that works is the special USB transfer cable.

I naively tried to transfer everything at first. It predicted 22 hours for the transfer so I set it going, later went to bed, went to work the next day, came home to find it had hung up about 15 hours into the process. Tried again, same thing. The only way I could ever get any success is by doing relatively small moves at a time; some data files, then music, then pictures, then two or three application programs. About half of these small moves (which take about 1- 2 hours) succeeded the first time, and about half had to be redone.

I bought a brand new Dell with 12GB Ram and all the bells and whistles. A few $'s shy of $3,000's, it was to replace my main work computer which was 3 years old. The new system had Win7 32bit Ultimate the new system had Win7 64bit Ultimate.

Usually when I change computers it takes me weeks to get everything back to how I had it so when I came across Laplink PC Mover 6 Pro I thought this is going to save me hours and hours of moving.

Anyway 1st time around I had to stop the process as it was still going after ore than 3 days, this is 3 days down time for me at work. 50/50 hindsight I should have stopped this after a few hours anyway I kept giving it chance thinking 4-5 days without a computer is going to be made up when I save all the moving of files and reinstalling all my software. After 4 days I tried again, the 2nd time around everything was completed when I woke up the next day, or so I thought. Most of the software (Adobe CS5, MS Office Pro 2007 + much more) would open but with lots of errors popping up each time they were opened, next when they tried to update there were licensing errors which meant the software couldn't update. After way too many problems I had to quit, I had to format my brand new Dell and start over, it has never been the same since as I couldn't toally get it back to factory standard as some of the drivers were not recognised.

Don't get sucked in by the promises this software makes, I suggest use the windows file transfer and reinstalling your software.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time December 22, 2010
Verified Purchase
I purchased PC Mover Pro to handle a migration to a new PC. Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Pro. Office 2007 to Office 2010. Given what I read about it before ordering, I assumed a level of sophistication that just isn't there. The program doesn't seem to be sensitive to the differences in system architecture from OS to OS and app to app. For example, when I tried to move my Outlook files, it created a file structure that mirrored my old PC, and didn't take the differences between Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 into account. Outlook 2010 wouldn't function afterward. I had to undo the migration, export my .pst files to an external hard drive and then import them into the new PC to make it work. The program also routinely ignored my de-selections in programs and files I wanted transferred, and moved things on each occasion I didn't want to bring into the new PC. I spent more time doing and un-doing transfers than I would have spent had I manually moved everything. The CD also comes with PC Sync which implies it can do the sort of manual transfers I ended up needing to do, but I can't say for certain because the app crashed upon loading each time I installed it on the Vista PC. BTW, I am CTO at my employer, and have served in that role at various stops since the mid-80s, so this was hardly my first time around the block with this sort of thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great (if you follow the instructions) April 24, 2011

I used this product a few years ago, and liked it. So despite several mediocore or bad reviews here for Ultimate, I bought it to migrate Vista (32) to Win7 (64). It worked perfectly! The package comes with very detailed instructions on the steps needed in order for the product to work, and I guess is you miss a step, it won't work. But Ultimate did a full migration of applications, files and settings for 4000 + folders/files (over 21 GB) in just a few hours without a hitch!

Found this to be an excellent program mover, especially going from the older versions like XP to 7 or 8 since they require more then a simple move. Read more
