I have been trying to be more economical (and healthy) with my lunches, and since the Laptop Lunch set is popular amongst food people on the Internet, i ordered one. I've been using it for about a month now; here are my observations:

1. Take note of the dimensions of the container! They're listed in the product description, but you may not realise how small it really is until you see it in person. Don't plan on carrying around a whole apple, for example, or even a clementine (unless it's a very small one) -- it just won't fit. Neither will one of those 'Snack Pack' pudding cups. You can't even fit a sandwich on normal-sized bread in there, unless you take out both of the larger containers inside. (Some people cut hot-dog buns in half and use those as the bread.)

2. The fork and spoon are obviously not fancy silverware, but they're as good as you can find at any department store. They're almost full-sized (like maybe 5/6-sized), so if you're buying this as an adult you don't have to be concerned about them being too tiny.

3. The plastic used for the box and the containers are supposed to be lead-free, paraben-free, and so on. I'm not a material analyst or anything, so i don't know if that's true, but i do think the 'texture' of the plastic is kind of weird. It seems like it's very soft, so for example when i'm scraping my spoon on the side of the container to get that last bit of food, it feels like i'm scraping up plastic. The fact that there are already tons of scratches inside all of the containers seems to support this. I'm not sure if that's an issue, but it is somewhat disconcerting.

4. The box latches shut with one of those tab-in-the-slot deals, which isn't especially secure or reliable.

I've been packing lunch for myself and my husband in our Laptop Lunch sets for around 18 months now, and have to say I love the system.

My laptop lunch kit appeals to the perverse part of me that actually ENJOYS eating airline meals (all those little containers!), and it somehow makes packing lunch something I enjoy, rather than a chore. It's fun getting creative in terms of figuring out what to pack each day, what little snacks and surprises I can sneak into the boxes, and another bonus is that it encourages me to use leftovers that would otherwise get scraped into the trash or languish in the fridge for days. Sure, you could achieve the same thing with any collection of plastic containers, but I love how everything fits together so well with these sets. You can really fit a surprising amount of food into those little boxes!

The 2.0 kit is a good start, but I'd recommend anyone ordering one adds a couple of extra sets of inner containers as well as a set or two of Bento Buddies to the order. That will not only give you more options in terms of what you can pack, but if you're like me and the last thing you feel like doing when you get home from work is cleaning out a ton of little boxes, you can just throw them in the dishwasher and use a clean set for the next day's lunch. I'd also advise picking up one of the larger carrying cases as these have a shoulder strap and handle (much easier to carry that way!) and has room to squeeze in something to drink and an extra box (breakfast!), or a thermos of soup. Oh, you'll also want some ice packs - the carrying cases have a mesh section in the lid to hold one of these in place and keep your lunch cool.

My only (minor) gripe is that the closures on the outer boxes really don't work very well, and they don't stay closed.

This really helps me control my portions during lunch time. I also like to eat out of the containers for every other meal as well....The recipe book is also very helpful! I also like that this product greatly reduces waste by not having to use any type of styrofoam containers or plastic and paper bags/cutlery.

The Laptop lunchboxes are awesome! I pack my daughter's lunch in it every day. She has the Bento System 2.0 which comes with a drink container and an insulated carrying case. I often get compliments about it and people ask where I got it. It is very durable and easy to clean. We are on our second year with this lunchbox and everything still looks new. Note that two of the little inside boxes don't have lids. You can get more of the little containers from the manufacturer if you feel you need all the boxes to have lids. I find it easy to work within the parameters of two wet lunch items and two dry lunch items. I use these to put drier foods in and the wetter items go into the boxes with lids. The insulated carrier is easy to wipe out and when it gets really icky, I hand wash it in the kitchen sink and it is dry by morning.

I have a laptop lunchbox as well (I bought a Lunch Date). It came with a stainless steel water bottle and a thermos for soup. If I pack soup and all the containers there is plenty of room and food for me. If I don't pack soup, sometimes I pack an extra container of salad or veggies in my bento bag.

We have one other little bento we use occasionally, but these get used every day.
