Lara takes the prize,
By Elliesings (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lara Takes Charge (Hardcover)
My Son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 3. Most of the books I purchased to read with him felt very sad. The children in the books were not able to eat regular food and their lives seemed restricted. And then I read Lara Takes Charge. I was thrilled to find a book that is positive that focuses on the fact that the child is normal and can do everything that all other children do- that is how I want my child to live his life. This is an uplifting happy book and my son and I love it.

Great Book!,

This is a great book. It is a powerful and optimistic message for kids and especially useful for younger children.

love this book,

I got this book for my son who just started kindergarten. This book has delightful illustrations, addresses the work and frustration that goes into having diabetes, but is also very empowering. The language is simple but honest. It is the first time we have gotten him a book that addresses diabetes, so I watched his face carefully as I was reading it to him for the first time, and he just grinned every time he recognized something of himself in the main character, Lara. I am so glad we have this book and highly recommend it.

Great tool to teach kids about diabetes,

It can be challenging for a child with diabetes to go to school in a place where other kids don't quite understand what having diabetes means and the fact that children with diabetes are like them, except for a pancreas that doesn't work the way it should.
This title can be a great help for parents of kids with type 1 diabetes to explain the children around them what diabetes is like and what insulin, insulin pumps and testing imply, so that diabetic kids can feel better understood in school and other social environments.

Nice Little Book,

This was a very cute book that told the story of a girl diagnosed with diabetes. Since my granddaughter had just been diagnosed, I purchased this book for her. Unfortunately, this book was written for a much younger child and my granddaughter's reading level is much higher so I had to send it back. If you have a younger child, say younger than 8, it is a very nice and simple book.

only complaint is the talk about insulin pumps, my son is not on the pump so he was a bit confused as to what she is talking about, and is too young to get what a pump is.

I was looking for a book that would explain Type I diabetes and a little bit about the pump to my daughter's Kindergarten class. I couldn't have been more pleased with this book. It was the perfect length, with easy to understand information. The message of the book was great as well, and I look forward to reading it with my daughter often.

This is a terrific book-very upbeat and positive. It's probably the best book written for kids with diabetes. However, it is really quite expensive and because of the cost, I wonder if it is not reaching some children with diabetes who would benefit from the wonderful message therein?

But kids with diabetes already ARE normal!,

I really felt uncomfortable when reading this book and decided almost immediately not to read it to my daughter who was just diagnosed with Type 1. The message throughout the book is, "I'm normal! I have diabetes, but I'm normal!". I didn't want to give my child the idea that anyone would have thought she was different in to begin with, just because she has diabetes. Just like kids who have to wear glasses, she just has a part in her body that doesn't work as well as it should.
I found many of the kids books on this topic to be similar. Be sure to read the books first to know if it's inline with what you want to communicate to your kid! |
