Editorial Reviews

Review

The book is for busy quilters. The author has used large blocks so that you can sew an entire quilt with a super great result! This book gives you 16 modern, simple and sophisticated quilts in refreshing colors with fancy prints. The quilts are only made of squares, rectangles and triangles. See for example Seahorse-quilt where the author has conjured up some super cute seahorses only using triangles. Irish Chain has a new modern look by being combined to a simple block, or a nice 9-patch baby quilt with a twist. There are so many options ...There are used many different materials and colors in each quilt, but the colors are joined by a solid or almost solid material which gives the finished quilt a modern and simple touch.
--Quilt DK, May 2013

16 QUICK AND EASY QUILT PATTERNS provides 16 designs featuring large and easy blocks made oversized for quick results, and offers keys to combining prints, solids, and matching colors for best results. The idea is to put together quick quilts that are easy to construct: this is achieved through the larger-sized blocks and keys to matching patterns and colors, making this very accessible for quilting novices.
--Midwest Book Review, 6/29/13

There are 16 borderless quilt designs included in this collection, all of which feature large simple blocks. This is a good way to create a quilt top quickly, using fairly large squares, rectangles and half-square triangles to produce a small number of big blocks, rather than losing interest when you know there are still 300 4-inch blocks to go! Victoria Eapen sounds like a very busy woman - a mother, dentist, businesswoman, blogger and sewer. She designed these quilts for other mums (and dads) with busy working lives but who also enjoy quilt-making even though they don't have the time for lots of sewing. The designs are fairly traditional in terms of block choice, but the super scale and Victoria's colour choices and fabric schemes work very well as modern pieces. The fact that these quilts can be put together quickly also recommends them as useful gifts or charity quilts. --Popular Patchwork, March 2014

I bought Victoria L. Eapen's Large Block Quilts based purely on the cover, with its gorgeous color combos and fabric choices. I am trying to get better at blending unusual hues. And I want THOSE fabrics!! The color surprises continue throughout. All are fresh, and reproducible using cheerful 30s repros, tone-on-tones, batiks, or the moderns which are so popular right now.

There are several very beginner-friendly patterns with few or no triangles. Plus, the lush photos will encourage a new quilter to build up their color confidence. The quilting is visible in many, but not all, of the pictures. Piecing diagrams have arrows for proper directional pressing. Only one quilt has borders. The text is rather brief, but seems adequate. The basic techniques section is at the back of the book, a publication choice I like more and more. I'll post here if I come across any instruction errata when I make my first quilt from this book.

And, yes, the blocks are large, with none under 12.5 x12.5 inches. The largest block is 24 inches square. Of the 16 assembled projects, 9 are square. But the construction is such that you could easily adapt the sizes to accommodate your own needs. The largest quilt is 90.5 inches square; the smallest is 38 inches square.

Just one extra thing would have been nice to have: additional color ways. Eapen does provide this on one of the projects, but more is always better. This book had been on my Wish List for months; now I can finally and happily rate Large Block Quilts a full 5 stars.

I had been anticipating Large-Block Quilts for some time. Vickie is a regular customer at our shop and she had mentioned on one of her visits that she was writing a book.

The moment I saw the cover photo, I knew I was going to love it. Each quilt is indeed made of large blocks. Yet, the blocks are designed in such a way that the end product is very pleasing to the eye.

I highly recommend this book to all the busy quilters out there. It is colorful and easy to read. The directions are clear and concise. I have also had the privilege of seeing all of the quilts in person and guarantee each one will not disappoint.

Sixteen beautiful patters, outlined with clear directions and numerous illustrations that make this book great for both the new quilter and seasoned quilter alike. And true to it's title, the quilt blocks are LARGE--which means these quilts are whipping up QUICKLY! Overall, a fabulous find for any quilter, who has any amount of time or any skill level!!
