Product name is oxymoron, but don't hold that against it.,

This review is from: HCSB Large Print Compact Bible (Burgundy Bonded Leather w/Snap Flap) (Leather Bound)
Before purchasing this bible, which is also available without a snap flap, I looked over at least a dozen different alternatives, in many different translations.
The thing that won me over to this particular pocket bible is the extremely clear and sharp printing. Holman really produced a superior product. The paper is opaque enough that there is very little "see through" to type on the opposite side of each page, and the letters themselves are crisp and fairly large. All of these features, which are very important to me, are rare in today's compact bibles. While the HCSB is not my favorite translation, I do like it. I believe that it is a bit more literal (word-for-word) than the NIV. It is, in places, more dynamic (thought-for-thought) than the NASB, ESV, or NKJV, but not in all verses. In terms of flow and understandability, it is about equal to the ESV and perhaps a tad easier to read than the NKJV. I compared this particular edition to the compact versions available of the ESV, NASB, NKJV, NIV, and even the KJV, and the only other bible that was as easy to read from a printing standpoint (without regard to translation) was a Holman KJV. Every other compact bible had either smudgey looking print, significant "bleed through" of the letters on the backside of the pages, or type that was simply too tiny to be of much use to me. This bible is a good example of the importance of convenience and quality. I really would have preferred a ESV, NASB, or NKJV (in that order) to a HCSB if the overall qualiity and legibility had been on par. They just were not in the versions I examined. In addition, the binding on this bible is among the nicest I have seen for a bonded leather edition. The pages are smyth-sewn and the bonded leather is supple. I am a bit surprised by this, since most of the other HCSB bibles I have seen have seemed cheap and low quality to me in terms of paper, binding and printing. This bible is certainly above the average HCSB quality. If you want to see what the HCSB translation is like, this might be the way to give it a try. If you can accept the translation, I think it would make a fine emergency, convenience, or leave-in-glovebox bible. For the full retail price, it is a good deal. For the Amazon price, it is a great value compared with other compacts.

EXCELLENT,
This review is from: HCSB Large Print Compact Bible (Burgundy Bonded Leather w/Snap Flap) (Leather Bound)
What a WELL MADE bible!! I had been looking for something like this in my local Christian literature store. NOTHING!I had read all the technical information on this translation in the hard bound volume reviews. I also did a search online about this version. I have read nothing but good about it. A pastor suggested this version for me since I did not like the newer renditions particularly because they had removed God's name from them. What an excellent buy!! I could not believe the quality for the price. It came very well packaged. Thank you Amazon for such an excellent product and for ending my quest for a good pocket version of the bible!

Not Large Print,
By
This review is from: HCSB Large Print Compact Bible (Blue Bonded Leather w/Snap Flap) (Bonded Leather)
I like the Bible's appearance and construction, but it is NOT large print as the spine of the Bible claims. If anything, it's more like tiny print. I do love the translation, which I've been told is very accurate. I recommend checking out the type size before you buy it. It is in NO WAY large print and should not say "Large print" on the Bible. By the way, I have a compact New Living Trans. Bible, large print, and the print really is medium-large, so it is possible to have genuinely large print in a compact Bible - Broadman Holman should learn from Tyndale House how to do it.

Overall a very nice product, very convenient size for carrying around, well-made, BUT the print is actually 8 1/4 point, a small font hard on eyes with imperfect vision. Otherwise would be a five-star item.

This is NOT a LARGE PRINT Bible,

This review is from: HCSB Large Print Compact Bible (Burgundy Bonded Leather w/Snap Flap) (Leather Bound)
The product name is very misleading. I searched on large print and I bought a copy for a relative with vision problems, but the print is only about 9 point, far too tiny to be labelled as large print.

A note on Print sizes,
By
This review is from: HCSB Large Print Compact Bible (Blue Bonded Leather) (Bonded Leather)
Guide to most large, giant, super giant font sizes for Bibles. (from largest to smallest) 1. Super Giant print Bibles: 18 point font size 2. Giant print Bible: 13.5 - 14 point font size 3. Personal Size Giant: 11 - 12 point font 4. Large print varies greatly by publisher and type of Bible, usually a 9 - 10 point font 5. Compact small large print bibles: these bibles are very small about 5 X 7 inches and have about an 8 point font (which is conidered large print by the publihers because most other compact Bibles this small in size have a 5 point font, 3 font sizes larger is why they call this very small bible a large print).

This is a great translation to read and study. The size is great to put in a purse or for easy carrying...the print can not be your typical sized large print or this could not be compact...that would be great but impossible but it iS large print for it's size. it is very convenient and easy..I really love mine for the times I need to carry a small Bible. I use a regular sized Bible w/ large print at home for everyday reading and study..it is a Holman also.

NOT Large Print - Unacceptable,

I feel a bit awkward writing a one star review for a Bible; however, for others who may be looking for a genuine Large Print Bible, I need to offer fair warning -- this isn't Large Print. Perhaps this is a larger font than they normally use in a compact Bible, but it is a very small font, approximately 8 or 9 point, I believe. I purchased this as a gift for a visually impaired friend and had to return and try again, meaning that the gift was delayed. Hopefully Holman will correct their improper advertising on future editions -- I do expect more from an otherwise reputable publisher, and was thus quite disappointed. In the meantime, Amazon should include a disclaimer in the product description rather than leaving this to the comments alone.

Loved the cover, the size is just right. The translation is excellent. the print is a little small but great with a little page magnifier . Loved the snap flap. Just right for the car.
That said, there are some negatives. Within a couple of weeks of receiving this bible, the binding tore. I opened up the replacement tonight and it is equally flimsy. It just won't hold up to regular use. I am planning to send both of them back and try another version

Based off the description listed in the advetisment, this Bible is exactly what I expected being perfect to carry around in my pocket, still easy enough to read, and has both old and new testaments.
