Why You Should Compost

Composting benefits the environment, your garden and your community. Making compost reduces trash, creates free soil fertilizer, helps soil to retain moisture and resist erosion, improves garden yields, turns waste into a valuable resource, saves limited landfill space, and recycles nutrients back into the soil.

Composting is also surprisingly rewarding and enjoyable for many people, even people who thought they weren't the composting type. Watching your kitchen scraps and yard trimmings transform into rich, nutritious fertilizer for your garden is a thrill!

What's wrong with stuffing your kitchen scraps down the disposal, you ask?

It's not really wrong; just wasteful (and hard on some plumbing). There is so much energy in organic waste like vegetable scraps, and composting so easily harnesses that energy and directs it back into the ecosystem, via your garden. Rather than putting synthetic chemical fertilizers on your lawn and garden, why not use the organic materials you've already got?

I recently became very fed up with the amount of stuff we were throwing out. Along with getting a 2nd container to keep our #3-6 recyclables (which we can't put in our city recycling bin), I picked up this compost bucket to keep under our kitchen sink. While the plastic recycling has been a disaster (the state of recycling in San Diego is very poor...), this little marvel has really been awesome.

With just my wife and myself, the bucket filled up in a little over a week. We live in an apartment without a compost bin so we have to take it to Whole Foods for the actual composting process to take place. As a result, we don't clean it out until it fills up. Luckily, the lid with the carbon filter kept all the smells in. It was a bit of a mess to clean up after emptying but we picked up some BioBags and they really make the bucket even handier.

I would definitely recommend this for your small kitchen composting needs.

Excellent product and was delivered promptly. The size allows me to reduce the number of trips I have to make to our compost pile. I sometimes don't empty the container for 3 days and it has never emitted an odor. In addition, it's light weight, making it easy to carry even when filled to the brim. Once emptied, I give it a quick rinse and it's ready to go. The only thing I would have preferred is a choice of colors, but that's not a major issue since everything else about the product is great!

I've looked high and low for a compost bucket that's not flashy - don't like shiny chrome ones - and not heavy like the crockery ones. This one seems to be the best one out there. I purchased it to replace the older model of the same design. We'd had the old one for about seven years, and after the puppy had chewed it and the charcoal filter thing kept falling out, I decided to buy a new one once the handle finally fell off. We actually use it for scraps for our chickens, not for compost, so the kids would often take it outside to the chicken pen. Suffice to say it had a hard life, and stuck in there well. My only request would be for more color options. The green is okay, and certainly more appealing than the old white one we had, but a choice of colors would be fantastic.
The compost bucket arrived from the seller within a week.

I was keeping my kitchen scraps in a Tupperware container on the kitchen counter and then under the sink b/c my wife couldn't stand looking at it. But it was a hassle to open and filled up too fast. With this compost bucket it fits perfectly under the sink, does not smell at all (when closed), the hinged lid is easy to open and add to and it is large enough to collect scraps for a week or two with my small family! Love it!

fruit flies...no matter what I've done I've gotten fruit flies. I empty it into the compost pile every day, wash it, and still...fruit flies. Now the bucket lives outside the front door, and that works much better, but still, I wish there was a way to have it on my kitchen counter

Had it for two years and loved it at first. Now, despite constant filter changes, scrubbing with bleach and air/sun dryouts, IT STINKS. Literally, the plastic has absorbed odors which are impossible to eradicate. And don't even get me started about the gnats and fruit flies. I am going to pitch it out and buy a stainless steel kitchen bucket.

sturdy and has a tight fitting lid that keeps odors and bugs away. Just the right size for the two of us, we only need to empty it about once or twice a week. Love this, it's perfect!

this compost pail is attractive, well made, and a great size for the kitchen. put on the counter or underneath in a cabinet. the filters in the lid completely block any odor. the opaque walls hide ugly compost. i bought this after seeing a friend's. very glad i have it.
