"The Large Macaws" is a behavioral and management, nutritional, and health-care guide -- as well as a history and an encyclopedia of well-and little-known facts about the biggest of all parrots (with occasional references to the mini-macaws). The book is lavishly illustrated; replete with tables and charts; and fully documented. The authors are among the world's leading experts on hyacinth and other large macaws. Highly recommended.

...after reading and seeing all the information that is given, it was well worth it. This book has 100 times more information than any of the other books on macaws. It was definately worth the price.

This is an outstanding book in every respect -- concept, execution, design, production. It is filled with practical, scientific, anecdotal, and photographic information, and will be of use to any breeder, hobbyist, or ornithologist. It is well worth its price, and one could only wish that all books were equally well-written and well-made.

This book is ideal for the beginner, a perfect reference for the professional, with points proven. It is easy to read and understand and the photographs are great. It gives great comparisons and history on many subjects and views on the Macaw

Although three people are listed as being the authors of this book, the impressive list of contributors as photographers, design, consultants, collaborators and acknowledgments goes on for three full pages.

This is a huge book (534 pages with the index starting on page 511) that certainly appears to cover everything about the large macaws that anyone would want to know.

The book is divided into three main parts with several chapters in each part. The first is Aviculture, written mainly by Joanne Abramson, the second is Veterinary Medicine, written by Brian L. Speer and the third is Conservation, written mainly by Jorgen B. Thomsen.

Over 300 beautiful colour photographs are used throughout the book submitted by 77 photographers as well as many detailed drawings by Marsha Mello.

Nutritional analysis charts are provided for nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and pelleted diets.

It would be much easier to say what is NOT in this book than to list everything contained herein. Other than the fact that there is nothing written by myself, (grin) I could not think of anything else that could have been included here.

This book IS very expensive, but if you have a Macaw - or even if you love Macaws, you should really see if you can get your hands on a copy. I am sure that you will realize that it is worth every penny.

While Im sure that this book doesnt cover absolutely everything known to mankind about Macaws... Its fantastic! Loaded with serious information from people who are quite obviously professional breeders and research scientists. Even though I am not a breeder, it definitely supplied many pleasant evenings of reading for me and my B&G ;)

I expected to find everything I need concerning macaws in this book. I am a beginning breeder and was particularly interested in mating and courting behaviors but was disappointed in how little was addressed regarding this. It had information found in my other books but nothing additional.

The rest of the book, care, health, housing etc. was well done.

This book was written by an amazing macaw breeder and her veterinarians. It is full of essential information for macaw enthusiasts and breeders alike. This book was a limited printing edition (done as a private endeavor) that was quickly purchased and is now very difficult to come by, some copies on EBAY have sold for as much as $1350. People who purchased the book are unwilling to let go of it. The authors have declined as yet to have this wonderful book reprinted. Opportunities to aquire this rare book are few and anyone interested should purchase the book if given the opportunity.

I love this book it has beautiful pictures, lots of information on everything. I would recomend to to any bird owner...

The book is an excellent resource for anyone who owns a macaw and provides valueable insight to those considering a macaw. Considering it was published in 1996, the information is still practical and worthwhile. I do not agree with the opinion about hybrid macaws but it is minor compared to the vast in-depth reading it provides regarding husbandry, geographical information, physiological information, etc. A must-own for anyone who loves these magnificent birds!
