A real bone crusher,

Granite to granite equals bone crushing efficiency. You put the slightly course granite structure up against wood or marble and you'll wonder why it took you so long to realize that granite just crushes better. The 8" size is perfect for my wife and I but my mother-in-law likes the 6" better since the weight can be a little tricky to handle going into the sink for a quick wash.
Pound as hard as you like and if it involves peppercorns the fine dust will eminate throughout the area causing many to sneeze. It's that efficient. (Never happened with the wood unit.) It looks very impressive and almost imposing depending upon the size of your counter. The inner surface is slightly polished with the exterior unpolished and looking like it was carved out of a piece of solid granite (which it was). The lip is over 1 inch thick and the little knobby grips are barely useable. I don't know how much native granite Thailand has left, so you might want to grab one while they're still available.

The 8" mortar is isactly what my wife was needing to crush her herbs to make her foods. She is Thai and the granite mortar which use to to be easy to find in the US was just what she needed. It is constantly in use in our house.
Thanks

Great for making Pesto,

This review is from: Large 8" Thai Granite Mortar and Pestle (Misc.)
I bought this to make pesto without using a food processor, which makes the pesto look like baby food. It really works with basil, and only takes about 5 minutes. The best part is having a glass of wine while making the basil, smelling the garlic, and tasting it with a finger as you go along.
You can make it coarse, medium or very fine. I prefer the coarse, where some pine nuts are still chunky, with some garlic pieces. My kids like to use it as it is fun to cook with their friends in the kitchen and use this "old fashioned" tool.

I bought one of these big mortar and pestle sets at a Thai grocery in Berkeley years ago (8.5" across the top). My partner said she thought it was an extravagance and wouldn't get much use. She then proceeded to use it several times a week, and has continued to do so for well over ten years now. There are no signs of wear whatsoever. She cooks Indian and Thai and other cuisines, and the m&p just keeps coming in handy. I put grommets around the edges of a potholder and we keep that laced onto the bottom of the mortar so we can slide it around on the countertop without making marks. It's really quite heavy, and it's much easier to slide than to lift. I wash it with water when I have to. I call this a must-have tool if you like to cook. We use a leather drinking-glass coaster and a small, shortish, dry stick of madrone firewood to break filbert nuts, and it's great for that.

Good - does the job,

Larger than I expected, and heavy too. Very robust - the postman dropped it on the way to our door without damage, although I don't think they were too amused at having to bring it to our door.
Does the trick though, and its large capacity stops overflow.

I love my new toy!!! It works great when I crush 2 heads of garlic! And they dont go flying everywhere. It looks great on my counter. It is heavy and a bit tricky to wash because of its heaft. But other than that...I love this mortar and Pestle.....

The weight of the pestle insures that no matter what you put in the mortar it will definitely be ground to a fine powder. However the narrow handle makes it much more difficult to hang on to unless you "choke-up up on the bat". Which brings me to the next point; the bowl of the mortar is fairly deep which definitely helps to keep whatever is being ground from ending up all over the counter. The problem arises from the sharpish edge around the inner brim which, if you have "choked-up", bring it perfectly inline with you knuckles. And finally I'm not a fan of having the exterior finished with a heavy shellac while the interior is left completely raw, though the leftover rough finish inside does help with grinding to the finest degree. Worse than that there was (dog?) hair that had become embedded in the sealant before it had dried, leaving me with the hair permanently affixed. Leaving the exterior unsealed and instead mildly polished would have given a mush better and more consistent finish.

We grow/make medicinals from herbs and were looking for a larger mortar/pestle to use that was rough enough to grind materials (some of which are woody) well. This fits the bill to a "T" and we love it!

This mortar & pestle is even better than I expected. It is extremely heavy so it stays in place while using. I've used it several times and I couldn't be more pleased. Clean up is easy with a damp cloth. I keep this on my granite countertop because it looks so beautiful and is handy. You won't be disappointed.

The product is great as expected, but as I tend to use every day it gets tough because of the weight, it is tough to clean and I tend to use less because of it.
The product is excellent. |
