Superb edition of the Bible,
By Will (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NASB Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible (Black, Genuine Leather) (Leather Bound)
This review is for the Black Genuine Leather edition of the NASB Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible (ISBN: 1-58135-131-3).
Basic info about this Bible: New American Standard Bible: (1995)Updated Edition 9 1/2" x 6 7/8" x 1 3/8" (This is the actual size of the Bible including the thickness, length, and width of the front and back covers. You might see other measurements on other websites, but those measurements are of the Bible's "Trim Size", i.e. they only measure the total size of the *paper* between the covers.) Two-column text Black lettering throughout Size 10 Font Center-column cross-references Verse format (Each verse starts on a new line) 8 Color maps 66-page Concordance Genuine Black Leather Smyth sewn binding Ribbon marker 13/16" Margin Each Book Begins on a new page Gilded page edges Published 2003 This really is an excellent edition of the Bible. The font size is large enough 1) to read off of from a podium without having to bend low for a closer look and 2) to read for extended periods of time with less eye strain. There are tons of cross-references useful for finding parallel passages in the Gospels, locations of Old Testament quotes in the New Testament, etc. I really like the text laid out in verse format because 1) It makes it easier (for me at least) to memorize verse by verse, since my eye is used to breaking up the text by verses and the verse numbers stand out more. 2)When looking up verses, (say, while reading a book) verse format makes it easier to find verses quickly. The paper is thin, but it feels sturdy. It's not so thin that you feel like you're going to rip it if you try to turn the page. The paper is almost completely opaque. "Ultrathin" is not quite fair when this Bible is compared to most Bibles, but it is quite thin considering the combination of the large print, cross references, and verse format. With all these, it couldn't really be much smaller. All in all, I am very, very pleased with this Bible. On top of all I've already said, it is of excellent quality, and I am confident it will last for many years to come.

NASB is the best. With that out of the way, here are my thoughts on this Bible.
The words "Large Print" and Ultrathin used for the same Bible are really an oxymoron. I guess the next step up in print is Giant, but the print in this Bible doesn't really seem large to me (unless compared to something like Cambridge's Pitt Minion). It just seems like a nice, readable size. The typeface is clear, the paper is white and also thick enough that there isn't really any bleed through of the text on the reverse side. It's very readable. As far as size goes, I find it comfortable to carry. You're not really going to stick it in a purse or pocket, but it's not as cumbersome as a study Bible like the Life Application or NIV Study Bible. Two other things I like about this Bible are no red-letter and it's by verse rather than paragraph. I find Lockman's use of bolding for paragraphing satisfactory and much prefer the verse layout for study.

Finally,
This review is from: NASB Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible (Black, Genuine Leather) (Leather Bound)
Finally, a bible that combines outstanding quality and a very reasonable price. In a time when the quality of bibles is heading in the wrong direction, this bible offers a pleasant exception. The Smyth sewn binding and genuine leather make this a bible that will last long beyond the alternatives. It's a bit too thick to be classified as "ultrathin", but it is a comfortable size with very readable text. If you're searching for an excellent offering for an NASB bible, give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.
