3.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Sells Mailers NOT subject to Surcharge
I found a mailer by PostageSaver that is NOT subject to the $.20 per unit surcharge. If you mail one disc it only costs $.44 each for First Class postage. Each pack of mailers comes with a letter from the post office which you can use as proof that no surcharge is due on these mailers. The mailers are sold and fulfilled by Amazon. Put PostageSaver in the Amazon search box...

Made of glossy-both-sides cardboard. Easy to write on with a ballpoint pen but if you want to use a fountain pen or roller ball with liquid ink, better use a paper label. Also, if you have a rubber stamp with "Media Mail" or "First Class" don't use it because the ink will smear. Use a sticker or write with a ballpoint instead. The cardboard material is thicker than a picture postcard but not quite as thick as the cardboad that comes with a new man's shirt. No internal padding, so the mailer is not as stiff as heavier and considerably more expensive ones I have been buying from Office Depot. However, I have been using Netflix DVD rental service successfully for years and their disk mailers are just flimsy paper, so I conclude that these mailers are very safe for mailing your disks even without the internal padding. The inside is glossy smooth, so it will not damage the surface of your disk. Overall sealed dimensions of the mailer are 6 inches x 5-15/16 inches. Unsealed dimensions are 6 inches x 7-5/8. These mailers are designed to mail disks either bare or in a paper or vinyl sleeve; there is not room inside for a plastic jewel case. The flap is securely self-sealing; just remove a paper strip to expose the adhesive and press the flap closed. The flap incorporates a perforated zip strip for easy opening of the package by the recipient. The description of "50 pack" is a bit misleading. A full pack of these contains more than 50 mailers so I received the quantity of 50 loose; i.e. not in sealed packaging; however that is not problem for me.

For calculating postage costs: each mailer weights 0.6 ounces empty, 1.2 ounces with one CD or DVD with paper sleeve, or 1.8 ounces with two disks in paper sleeves. The postal rate structure has gotten more complicated lately... so much so that even the postal clerks can get confused. Your most accurate source to calculate postage is the website: [...]. Within the USA, you can send these mailers first class cheaper than media mail, but there is a surcharge over the letter rate. The mailers are defined as packages instead of letters because they are (1) square, and (2) contain a rigid object (so they have to be hand-canceled). Right now (5/31/2011) the first class letter rate for two ounces is 64 cents, but the first class package rate is 84 cents. Letters sent outside the USA can go first class international. These rates vary by country, but once again there is the surcharge to be paid. For example, first class international letter rate for 2 ounces to Costa Rica is $1.76; package rate is $1.96. For Australia: letter = $1.82; package $2.02. Parenthetically, there is a big stink going on now because the USPS has let Netflix pay the letter rate instead of the package rate for their zillions of DVD mailings.

These mailers are excellent, but I had to go to the mat with my local Post Office. They insisted it had to be mailed as a package because of the stiffness. I printed out the info from the USPS website and returned to the Post Office. Eventually the supervisor contacted someone higher up and agreed I was correct--these go as "non-machinable letters." The dimensions information above is incorrect. When folded shut, these mailers are 5.7" h by 6.3" w. If they were over 6.1" high they could not go as a letter. I had enclosed a DVD with full-face label, inside a light sleeve, plus with a 4.7" square insert printed on card stock and the leftover DVD label sheet with end labels for a crystal case. This all came in under 2 oz. A regular letter of that weight would require $0.61 in postage, but because it is stiff (non-machinable) there is a surcharge of $0.20, so the postage was $0.81. My PO insisted because it contained a DVD that it must be a package. Wrong. By its dimensions it is a letter. Because it is stiff (also because it isn't sufficiently rectangular) there is an extra charge of 20 cents. Don't let them bully you into paying $1.39 postage for a "first-class mail package." If it were too large to be a letter (as in a large envelope), then being stiff would kick it up to requiring "first-class mail package," but its dimensions are within the "letter" limits. Hope this saves you some time and money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Large White Cardboard CD Mailer with Adhesive Flap - 50 Pack (Electronics)
I used these envelopes to send copies of a DVD formatted slideshow that I made for all my friends that went on a cross-country trip with me over the summer. Every one of them, living all over the US, got the envelopes and watched the DVDs without complaining about any scratches or glitches. The disks were in the envelopes without any protection and with no extra adhesives. I'm very happy with their quality and would recommend them to anyone who wishes to send a friend a disk. They're light, strong, and good quality. Your disks won't be damaged at all! Mine weren't! I'm very satisfied with this product.

I have purchased these mailers several times, and I have yet to find one that doesn't work as it should. Good quality control.

I recently had a batch of dvd's that I needed to send out, so I purchased these mailers. I'm very happy with the mailers. They are large enough that you can either insert just the dvd/cd by itself, or you can put the disk into one of the thin jewel cases and put that inside the mailer for added protection. Either way it works great.

These are excellent mailers, so 5 stars for that.

Just a note warning people not to go to the PO thinking that you'll be able to just talk to the clerk to get the proper 1st class letter rate-- GO PREPARED! PRINT OUT ALL OF YOUR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS PROVING YOUR POINT AND BRING THEM WITH YOU. To the postal clerk you are just one more uninformed and annoying person that they want to finish with so that you will leave ASAP. They won't think that you have any understanding of postal rates or procedure and will think that you're at best misinformed (but more likely just a pain in the neck).

I was unable to discuss the proper rate with the postal clerk unlike one of the previous reviewers. The clerk just wouldn't hear me out to discuss what defined a letter (if it's not more than 6-1/8 inches high by 11-1/2 inches long by 1/4 inch thick and doesn't weigh more than 3.5 ounces, it's considered a letter). He said that since it's made out of stiff cardboard it's a package-- which is NOT one of the criteria for what defines a letter on the USPS website. Unfortunately for me I didn't print anything from the website to show him, but even if I did I think it just would have served to further antagonize him (and I was careful when I asked about the rate to be polite. Alas, he took it as an attack and snapped back). He was getting pretty annoyed-- I had the impression that even if I proved him wrong it wouldn't have been much of a victory so it was worth it for me to just pay the extra $1 and get out of there. I just had to trust his "25 years of experience doing this job, so I know what I'm doing".

Am I just venting? Yes-- yes I am. But I also hope this is informative. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Mailer, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Large White Cardboard CD Mailer with Adhesive Flap - 50 Pack (Electronics)
We use this mailer to mail out all of our cd catalogs and there has never been any problems with the cd not arriving safe. A great buy. The surface is glossy and will smear if using hand written pen works great with malling labels. Great buy.

Basic mailer. No liner of any sort, but great for sending multiple DVDs. My cost-effective solution:

Memorex CD/DVD Keepers (50-Pack, Plastic Sleeves)

one each per DVD that I'm mailing. I just sent out six (each individually packaged in a keeper) in one of these cardboard mailers with no trouble at all. Client received them and had no problem reading files.
