Just Buy This Book!,
By Fred Mertz "Fred Mertz" (Buffalo, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Largemouth Bass; an In-Fisherman handbook of Strategies (Paperback)
If you only want to read one book about Largemouth Bass fishing, this should be it. It is the most comprehensive of all the Largemouth Bass books that I've ever read and explains things in an easy straight-forward tone. If you ever wondered what an "oli" lake is or what a flatland impoundment looks like and how to fish them, this book is for you. In addition to the types of water that Largemouth Bass live in, the history, biology, seasonal periods and food sources are covered as well as how to fish specific structures such as boat docks, points, weeds etc. Some of the specific lure techniques are a bit dated and lacking but that doesn't detract from the overall value of the book. With that said though, I should add that if you just want a book that tells you how and when to fish a spinnerbait or a plug or a worm, this In-Fisherman bass strategy book is not for you. This book is meant to give you a broad base of knowledge about the bass and its biome and how an angler can exploit such to catch bass.

Largemouth Bass; an In-Fisherman handbook of Strategies
This Book tells, in a very organized way, the basics of Largemouth Bass fishing. It covers almost everything you need to know, from where they tend to live, to what lures you use for different situations. This wonderful book has helped me immensely, not only with largemouths but even Bluegill, Crappie, Perch and more. I enjoy my time fishing much more after reading this book. It is surprisingly well written and held my attention well, with the exception of the chapter that told about the different lakes and their characteristics. However, That was likely the chapter that I found most helpful. If there was one thing I would change about the book, it would be that I would make the book longer, particularly the section on lures, I practically have it memorized. If you (like me,) enjoy reading about lures, I would also recommend The Bass Angler's Almanac: More than 650 Tips and Tactics by John Weiss All in all I would rate Largemouth Bass; an In-Fisherman handbook of Strategies ten out of ten. This book comes highly recommended! P.S. If you wish to buy both, consider Amazon.com. The have a special where if you buy both you will save a handsome sum. [...] Daniel Mohr

Great read for bass fishermen,

This is a wonderful, detailed book that provides a good background on everything from the history of the sport, to the bass's habitat and behavior, to different fishing techniques. Reading it has helped me put more quality bass in the boat (to be released soon after, of course), but more importantly it has given me a new appreciation for the sport. I enjoy my time on the water that much more because I have a better understanding of my surroundings and the fish I'm chasing after.
I would suggest this book to any amateur bass fisherman who is addicted to the sport like I am. I also highly recommend sharing this with younger bass fisherman 13 and above. If they love to fish they'll eat this up. But be sure to read it first, you don't want them showing you up consistently on the water !

It's an OK book for a complete novice, but a lot of the information is kind of obvious, and there's a lot of over-explaning things that most people can figure out for themselves, and don't really need to be told. I found it wordy; providing scientific names in parenthesis was unnecessary, or just nerdy, or showing off or something. That was annoying to me. Others might like that. Also, there's too many irrelevant statistics, but it's an okay introduction to bass fishing, albeit not a very inspired one.

Largemouth Bass in the 1990's by In-Fisherman Magazine is another fine reference for the avid or occasional bass fisherman. Along with excellent information on every aspect of bass angling the book speaks to history, philosophy, and management of America's bass resources. Bass behavior and locales are expertly outlined. All kinds of lures and techniques for their use are thoroughly discussed as well as rods and reels that make a complete bass fishing package. This book has outstanding photos and illustrations that clarify and enhance the subjects covered. If you bass fish or intend to begin this would be a number one choice.

If it says IN Fisherman on it, Buy it! They produce some of the best books and videos on freshwater fishing. Period! Full of current, scientific, and practical advice on the species you are after. If you don't learn from this book, then you probably helped write it.
