From the back cover-

Trapped in a loveless marriage, Lark Elliot longed to lead a normal life like the pretty women she saw in town, to wear new clothes and be courted by young suitors. But she had married Cletus Gibb, a man twice her age, so her elderly aunt and uncle could stay through the long Colorado winter in the mountain cabin he owned. Resigned to backbreaking labor on Gibb's ranch, Lark found one person who made days bearable: Ace Brandon. But when her husband paid the rugged cowhand to father him an heir, at first Lark thought she had been wrong about Ace's kindness. It wasn't long, however, before she was looking forward to the warmth of his tender kiss, to the feel of his strong body. And as the heat of their desire melted away the cold winter nights, Lark knew she'd found the haven she'd always dreamed of in the circle of his loving arms. So even though they were good characters I couldn't see where this great love of there's came from.

Warning -semi-spoilers below

Average book. I never really connected with either the hero or the heroine. And thats a shame because I did like parts of their persona's but other aspects I did not. What originally drew me to the book was the interesting stud-for-hire premise, but that quickly changed. I didn't like it that Ace was OK with prostituting himself and using Lark for pleasure (even though she wanted it). There was never any mention by either the hero or heroine what they would do if she did actually get pregnant (like having unprotected sex for months wouldn't result in this!). And I never really felt any real *emotion* between these two; like that maybe she was crushed that he left and he couldn't stop thinking about her etc.

Another disappointment, the villain was a complete cliche -a hideous looking, old, fat, smelly, physically and mentally abusive (that was a bit disturbing in the book) man who is impotent AND has mommy issues!! I mean come on!! What next? Oh yeah I forgot he beats his horse too! And he's a criminal! So you would think that this vile pig would die in some spectacular action packed scene in the end -right? NO he didn't! His demise was ho hum. Grrrrr!

So while the book as a whole is entertaining I just couldn't really get into it. I didn't feel the love between these two protagonists. And I felt like I got gypped some action at the end. I don't regret reading it but in the future I'll get more Hess from the library.

A loosely similar plot can also be found in The Fulfillment.

But if your really looking for some great cowboy romance I suggest Texas Destiny.

Much Like Lindsey, Rogers and Cynthia Simmons "Anything, My Love" I couldn't put it down. Great story and lots of humor and sexy fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet!, December 8, 2002

I liked this book and think most romance lovers would. I didn't adore it, but not because it wasn't well done. It just wasn't what I enjoy most. I tend to go for the style of Lindsey, Sherwood and my latest favorite "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons. A sizzling page turner with a hero to die for.
