5.0 out of 5 stars A real life romance, December 24, 2003

This review is from: A Lark on the Wing (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
What can I say? A LARK ON THE WING is different. I am typically not a big romance reader, but I met Ms. Hamilton at one of her book singings and became intrigued. She promised that the book would be somewhat different in its approach to romance, and true to her word, it was. While reading the book, I found myself thoroughly interested in the ups and downs of the characters; it was like real life. At various points in the novel, I rooted first for Austin, and then Gary (the ex-husband). Ms. Hamilton convinced me that both of these men had a positive side, as well as a dark side. I have to admit, the ending was a surprise, but I figured that's real life.

Even though some of the books' typesetting is not 100%, it did not get in the way of the story nor should it be viewed as a negative reflection on the writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complex Romance, December 23, 2003
By
JT304 (Omaha, Nebraska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Lark on the Wing (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
I found A LARK ON THE WING to be an excellent read. Indeed, it was not your typical romance. The story was filled with lots of twists and turns, and the plot was very true to life. For a fresh change, the male characters' backgrounds and personalities were thoroughly developed and explored. This offered me an opportunity to better understand their motivation. Ms. Hamilton's development of the characters was not biased. As the story progressed, I found my emotions identifying first with Sedona, then with aspects of Austin, and finally just wanting the two to take time to listen and understand where the other was coming from.

The female character, Sedona, had real strength, backbone and spark. Her dry humor and "attitude" came across loud and clear, and kept me smiling. I read Ms. Hamilton's first novel, CYPRESS WHISPERINGS, and greatly enjoyed how she handled her female characters. They are not love struck ninnies, but strong complicated women.

I also found it interesting how she integrated the element of forgiveness and understanding self into this romance. The novel's ending is not tied up in a pretty little package as in most romance novels, but it is true to life. From beginning to end, Ms. Hamilton does not deviate from her intent to present an honest romance. Either you appreciate this style of writing, or you don't.

If you are not looking for candy and fluff, A LARK ON THE WING is a great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'll be generous and give it four stars, December 15, 2003
This review is from: A Lark on the Wing (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
You don't have to be African American (I'm not) to enjoy this book's story. I hate cheesy romance novels - bodice busters and Harlequinn and all that, but this story was more complex and genuine than any of those. I only give it four stars because 1) THE EDITING WAS HORRIBLE! Misspelled words; quotation marks missing in a lot of parts; too many commas or not in the right place, etc. If you are looking for quality editing don't buy this book. 2)I didn't like the fact that she almost slept with her lying cheating ex husband and 3) the ending was not very good. You'll see what I mean. It really deserves a 3 or 3 and a half.
