5.0 out of 5 stars Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary, December 6, 2007
By
This review is from: Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)
A friend purchased this very same dictionary in Canada. When I saw it, I absolutely had to have one, and found it on Amazon.com. The only thing that differentiates these two dictionaries is the cover. This Larousse contains 400,000 translations and lists all the different usages of a word, with each usage followed by a sample phrase. It is a great source of information and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very refined dictionary, October 27, 2008
This review is from: Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)
The Larousse Advanced French-English Dictionary is an extraordinary reference book. It is well laid out, well illustrated (with glossy pages on such topics as construction, cars, and sports), and it gives multiple meanings and uses for the words being defined. Bold typeface for the entries makes it exceptionally easy to find the word in question. Besides having useful "cultural notes," the Larousse Advanced has a number of "usage modules" suggesting ways of saying common expressions in daily life. To keep the heft of the book under control, the pages are of very thin paper. Clearly, this is the product of generations of dual-language dictionaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big help and fun too, April 11, 2009

Meredith "Bear" (Las Cruces, New Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)
This dictionary is even better than I expected from the information provided on Amazon.com. I've known some French since I was a kid, and would rate my ability as intermediate, limited mainly by timidity. I was recently involved in a business situation that required extensive correspondence involving commercial, real estate, and banking terms, as well as internet communication.

After relying on a 75-year-old Cassell's for a while, I decided that I needed something more up-to-date. I wanted access to modern terminology and idioms, so that I wouldn't sound like a Victorian textbook. All the reviews of this book were so favorable that I looked no further.

In sum, I can find just about every expression I need--the context notes are extremely helpful--and the modern-day terminology is very complete. It's great to be able to look up, for example, "ISP" (literally, "electronic garden gate") or "spam" (literally, "little rotten things") and know that I'm using the right verbiage.

Yeah, it's way too big to take on a trip. But for anything else, it's tops.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humongous! Not a pocket dictionary! Pas un dictionnaire de poche!, August 31, 2009

Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)

For a long time I've been disappointed with my concise French/English dictionary! There weren't enough definitions to satisfy my curiosity! So, after some comparisons I decided on this version over the Oxford Hachette, as I already own that on the CD-ROM version. Which I find exceptionally helpful with pronunciations! I'd be lost without it!

I choose the Larousse because it was about $5 less, but still advertised at 250k references and 400k translations and is no doubt more dictionary than I'll ever need! I read that it was 1221 pages but in fact that is just the Anglais side and the Francais side is 1112 pages! In my math that totals 2333 pages no matter how many times I add the figures!

Also there are French/English verb pages, number pages, and a very chic cultural supplemental in the middle of the book with maps, history, animal names, housing names and so much more! This book measures about 10" L x 7" W x & 3" thick! I did not weight it if you were thinking that next! Ha.

The pages are a bit on the thin side but not cheap looking and the hardcover appears that it could be beefier for a book of this massive size. It definitely needs a place on your desktop for easy access, although I won't think twice about hauling it from room to room as the need necessitates!

Very happy camper with this purchase! Price and quality! Bon Chance!

4.0 out of 5 stars good for translation, July 4, 2009

This dictionary is too huge to be lugged around for use outside the office or home, but it's a good reference, especially for translation of older texts. It doesn't have enough of the more common present-day idioms; for that, I use wordreference.com. Still, it has enough multiple entries for words that you can usually find some of the more obscure meanings that you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource, October 2, 2008
This review is from: Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is wonderful, comprehensive dictionary! I can find just about any word in it quickly and easily. It also has some interesting extra resources in the middle of it, such as how to write and address letters in either language. But be warned that it is not easily carried around, it is a beast of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grandaughter Puts to Good Use, September 21, 2008
This review is from: Larousse Advanced French-English/English-French Dictionary (Hardcover)
I gave the Larousse Advanced French-English/Enlish-French Dictionary as a gift to my grandaughter who is taking High School French. The 2nd day she had it proved to be very helpful to complete homework she was assigned in French class. She uses it continually & says she couldn't have chosen a more informative dictionary than the Larousse Advanced Edition & recommends it to all taking or interested in the French language.

This really is an excellent French/English dictionary. The dictionary has detailed pictures showing parts of mechanical items, computers, etc with full detail in both French and English. In addition, this book has sample letters (both formal and informal), providing explanation on layout and so on. This really is an excellent text for anybody who is studying French to a business level

5.0 out of 5 stars french dictionary, October 24, 2009

Great French dictionary. Includes grammar and lots of idioms and French culture snips. A must for any serious student of French. All these years using a pocket dictionary was a waste. I should have had this thing and I would have understood a lot more of the French literature I was trying to read. So far, I have found every word I have attempted to look up. The only words you won't find are proper nouns, or probably some Parisian slang won't be in there either.
