Good general-purpose French-only dictionary,

This is what we'd call a "collegiate" dictionary, intended for middle and high school students (collegiens et lyceens). As such, it's probably the best choice for most everyday French reading. The definitions are clear and concise, and coverage of current colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions seems good. The one quirk with this is that the color "encyclopedia"-type inserts seem to be randomly arranged, with no connection to nearby dictionary entries. This kind of limits their use as references. Note: this is a French-only dictionary; i.e. all the definitions and descriptions are in French. Look elsewhere for a French-English dictionary!

You can't go wrong w/ La Russe. A must have for French speakers as well as those seriously interested in the language and culture
