Great Performance, Annoying Production,

As a long-time fan of Larry Carlton, I was really looking forward to seeing this DVD. I've seen Larry live a couple of times and he always delivers the goods - exceptional playing, terrific melodic compositions and a super band. This show is no exception, and it's interesting to see Larry play his first Valley Arts guitars, especially the Valley Arts 335 copy he's holding on the cover. On the downside, I was severely annoyed by the unfortunate television trickery that afflicts this production. The director has apparently just discovered crossfades and, like someone with a new camcorder who overuses the zoom, forces them on viewers way too often. The result is a series of ill-conceived double exposures that make it hard to focus anything. Plus, shots often shift away from soloists just when you want to see what they're doing. All in all, a disappointing, intrusive and dated production style works to spoil what could be an engaging look at a monster player performing at the height of his powers.

Simply the best,

It's quite hard to catch Larry Carlton on DVD as there is not much available. As a big jazz gutar fan, I wasn't disappointed. The stuff he plays is as relevant as it is today. Everything is excellent except for the terrible camera angles and superfluous video effects. Sometimes it gets difficult to see what his fingers are doing. Apart from that, I'm just glad I have a copy of this.

A bit dated,

I'm a fan but this is very dated. Good playing but I wish he wouldn't sing and jump about. There is a lot better out there namely the Carlto n Lukather Band DVD... that's great.
