I loved this book because it shows how all of Larry's friends, while being very different, coming from different countries and traditions, can get along and celebrate together.

One funny thing about the book is that out of the myriads of characters that are coming to Larry's party, only ONE is a native of New York City... which is very true of the big Apple, it is hard to find someone who was actually born there!

My favorite character is Sumita, an Indian elephant who got lost from her party of friends as she was visiting the city while traveling with her circus. She now lives in Times Square, reminding people to "slow down".

Nat's stories (she is the writer) feel real, and just like she said in the reading of the book on opening night: "each neighborhood in New York city is like its own country"...this is very much reflected on the book.

Carla's drawings are beautiful and interesting, filled with details. A kid could get lost on the personalities and the gifts they bring for Larry.

One sweet detail, also, is that this book was created and produced by crowd-sourcing, meaning that they made it as a project on Kickstarter and raised 10,050 dollars. It is nice to see it come to fruition.

And... the book is available in English and Spanish!

My favorite part of the story is the end... you'll see why.

This was a very cool way of explaining immigration to younger kids. I like how it tells a bit about the culture the animals come from and also how they met Larry in America. Each page introduces us to a friend of Larry’s with a picture on one full page and the text on the next. The story is one that a young kid can’t read by themselves (the reading level is harder and some of the animals talk with an accent) but the story would make an awesome bedtime story or a way for parents and teachers to tell an immigration story or introduce kids to the countries represented in the book. There are footnotes on each page to explain language or phrases used on the page for the reader (for example what an African Djembe is or what “Xie xie” means in Chinese). Besides the informative and fun story, the illustrations are spectacular!

"Larry and Friends is a delightful look at the cross-cultural tapestry of New York as Larry, a juggling Brooklyn canine awaits the arrival of his equally colorful international animal friends to celebrate his birthday.
Although New York city is a melting pot of immigrants, it can still be difficult to feel accepted,
but the whimsical story and illustrations of Larry and Friends finds joy in celebrating New York's rich cultural diversity."
