Book Description

Laryn and her sisters know nothing about the basics of life because the Federation has always supplied them with every need, but at a terrible price. Now they have a chance to join with a pastoral colony and leave behind the dangers of life in the Federation forever. Since it means staying together they take it, along with 500 other 'Fed girls', all of whom are looking for the same thing. Freedom.

‘Pastoral’ is just another word for primitive—a concept Federation citizens can hardly comprehend—and the Fed girls quickly discover that their new-found freedom comes with great responsibility. It's a struggle to learn all the skills they'll need for a life of self-sufficiency, but these difficulties pale when compared to the social and emotional trials they face. Laryn and her sisters know nothing of the ways of their fellow colonists, whose lives include such foreign concepts as community and, strangest of all, marriage—which will soon be required of them.

Despite the Fed girls' agreement to marry, Laryn is determined to keep her little family together for as long as possible. But when a man slips past her own carefully built defenses she is faced with an impossible choice. Marriage means abandoning her sisters to find their own way, but how can she give up the newly discovered wonder of love?

Unpredictable and emotionally charged, Laryn’s story is about self-discovery and the harsh realities of choice. Desperate to find where peace and accountability meet, she must choose—but how will she decide?

3.0 out of 5 stars A book of parts November 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a book of 2 parts. The first part is great, and the only critique one could have is that it is a slight bit slow. The second part is without a doubt slow, but also predictable and preachy to the point of inconsistency.
This is a world which is so far removed from us that they needed scholars to research and discover old names such as Maggie and Martha, yet somehow celebrate Christmas complete with carols and pageants, and religious concepts unchanged (baby Jesus). Now add that our female protagonist has her life issues solved by God at the end.
It would have made a far more interesting book if the author had actually accepted that religion and faith changes with time, and like roses, can have many names and guises, and had instead of simply preaching christian values and lifesyle, actually explored how the concept and belief in God might survive and change with societies such as the Federation.
Also did not like the end of the book- After being seriously depressed over the fact she will be on her own with little purpose, abandoned by all she loves, she somehow decides that by being ok with giving up her love interest, the rest is just dandy and she is now looking forward to- what? I would have understood if she got over the worst of her depression, but to ignore the fact that at the end of the book she is on her own in what most would feel to be an insecure situation, seemed to me a bit much.
I would not buy book 2, but would get it should it be available for free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating journey. October 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Laryn Rising (The Chronicles of Nequam) is truly the best book I've read in a very long time. I read so much I usually figure out the gist of the story very early on. Not so with this book. It kept me guessing and wanting more.
Jenny Baxter is a very talented author and deserves accolades for the way she immerses a reader so brilliantly into the lives and events throughout the story. I couldn't put it down. Laryn is a character I think everyone can relate to on one level or another. The cast of characters are delightful. I felt a myriad of emotions from laugh out loud moments to body shaking sobs of heartbreak. I don't think I've ever connected so fully to a cast of characters before and I believe its due to the authors talented style of telling a story in a way that you completely immerse yourself in their world. Bravo!
Book two cannot come out quick enough for me!

Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed reading this book.Did not put it down until I was done!I really enjoyed getting to know Laryn and her sisters. Just enough detail to give the reader a good picture but not too much that it gets boring. It keeps you reading to know what happens next in the characters lives. I recommend this book. You will not be sorry you read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars couldnt put it down!! October 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Typically I find reading boring, I have a hard time associating with the characters and I rarely get far enough into a book to really get myself hooked. But THIS book was different. I was hooked pretty quickly and couldn't put the book down! Every time I grabbed my iPad (to read on the kindle) my son (5yrs old) would say, "No! Not reading again!?!?" Lol. I was able to get into the characters quickly and the author gives u a lot of info early on in the book which helps you, the reader, to paint a vivid picture in your mind of what is happening and what it would be like if you were actually there. Just as quickly as I read the first book I am eager to read the rest of the books in this series! There is the prefect amount of action, twists and romance and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read!
