This laser line tool measures 2 x 2-7/8 x 3-3/8 inches and weights just 1.7 pounds, so it practically fits in the palm of your hand. It includes both a pouch and a hard-shell carrying case to help protect it from the rough realities of construction work, and it's also available in a system package that includes the SLD laser detector for expanded utility in exterior applications. The PLS180 is powered by three standard AA-sized batteries (included), and it can run over 30 hours between battery changes. All PLS tools are designed and manufactured to meet strict quality control guidelines, and the PLS180 is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

Simplify Layout Tasks and Increase Productivity

Whether you're a carpenter, plumber, HVAC specialist, or general contractor, you know that layout tasks and quality-control are essential and time-consuming components of every construction project. The PLS180 lets you accomplish these jobs quickly, accurately, and without relying on complicated, time-consuming setup.

The PLS180 generates two crisp, visible laser lines for plumb and level applications, with an indoor visible working range of 100 feet. The PLS180 has the longest laser lines in the industry. The lines project at over 180 degrees. This means that the level line projects wall to wall wrapping a room, and the plumb line projects behind the tool allowing the laser line to wrap a plumb line completely around a room or door opening makes the PLS180 a truly versatile tool capable of helping with everything from acoustic ceiling or door and window installations to wallpaper, drywall, and tile jobs. And industry-leading brightness makes sure that these lines are easy to see. For interior work to 10 feet high, consider pairing this tool with the PLS-20513 telescoping tripod (not included).

For effective outdoor use to 200 feet, the PLS180 offers a pulse setting that works with a PLS-SLD detector to deliver reliable readings over longer distances and in bright light conditions (detector not included). The PLS180 is accurate within 1/8-inch over 30 feet.

PLS Benchmark Dampening Ensures Consistent, Reliable Layout Results

Like all PLS point and line laser alignment tools, the PLS180 is fully self-leveling, and it takes full advantage of the patented PLS pendulum design and magnetic dampening to deliver real, usable results. Dampening is the settling down effect on the laser beam, and thanks to this advanced technology, all PLS point and line lasers settle down instantly when moved to a new layout point.

Additionally, this system compensates for job site vibrations caused by compressors, generators, and other heavy equipment, preventing the laser point from "jumping" around and ensuring that your laser delivers accurate, usable information. This helps your team get jobs done right the first time to save you time and money.

Three-Year Limited Warranty

PLS has upgraded its warranty from a single year to a three-year limited warranty. During this warranty period, your PLS product will be repaired or replaced (with the same or similar model at our option), without charge for either parts or labor, through PLS.

If your laser tool ever does need to be serviced, PLS offers fast, 48-hour factory turnaround on repairs or replacements to help ensure that your PLS laser line tool continues to provide accurate performance and improved productivity for the full duration of your career.

I purchased this tool to install a series of cabinets and provide an easily reproducible plumb line in a kitchen which has no right angle walls and also curved walls. This tool made life much easier on this oddly shaped room and measurements and setup were a snap. I attached this tool to a vertical (adjustable) pole in the middle of the room and away I went, lines set and done in 10 min rather than 2 hours. I came back multiple times aligning in other configurations and they snaped back to the same points each time plus or minus a sixteenth of an inch. I am very happy with this tool and do not regret the price paid.

This is a great little laser that has seen more use than I even thought it would. I bought it for a hotel sign hanging project where measuring up the wall or fumbling with a jig just wasn't practical for scale of the project. So I clamped a piece of angle steel to my cart, and attached the included magnetic bracket, set my height and it didn't budge for the whole project.

I just this week used it to layout for a kitchen install. Set my wall and base height lines. It was also very handy for a tile backsplash in a kitchen recently.

I did consider a rotary type because I wasn't sure if this went greater than 180 degrees (a feature I needed for the sign job). It goes 3 degrees or so "backward". This is something that would have been nice to know but I took a chance and it paid off.

I only give it 4 stars because

1.for the price I thought it might come with a drywall mount or a grid clamp for drop ceilings (see Dewalt). Not a deal-breaker (I'll figure something out). It does have the magnetic bracket.

2. The case included ended up collecting dust in my shop. A nice idea but for me a waste of space and unnecessary. Lose the case and... (see above note)

Overall, I would choose this product again and, after much research, would recommend it over anything else out there.

i've been holding out from buying a laser level hoping for something like this. i've used the PLS5 and PLS3 and like them but the annoying thing was always moving the little point of a laser to where you need it. I use laser levels mostly to level ceilings and floors in my remodeling job. now this chore has gone from a two to a one person job as i don't have to have anyone manning the level to move the one point around.

love it!!

The good:
1. What you see is what you get, so it's easy to use with basically 1 button.
2. The horizontal beam seems to have stayed level, and the vertical beam stayed plumb (while it lasted).
3. It survived 2-3 drops from 10 ft. high or lower with no immediate problems.
4. Beam visibility is on par with other laser levels in this price range.

The bad:
1. There is no lock-off (to allow for easier off-level lines or to carry the unit without rattling).
2. The plumb/vertical beam stopped working after 2.5 years of fairly light use for no apparent reason (hadn't been dropped for at least several weeks).

The story:
I have owned this tool for 2.5 years. It is a no-frills laser level with the following settings: level (horizontal beam), plumb (vertical beam), and both beams together (crossing at a 90 degree angle in front of the unit). The PLS 180 self-levels using an internal weight, but the weight cannot be locked off. It will rattle as you carry it, and it is not easy to use the PLS 180 for diagonal lines (e.g., for lines for low-slope roof beams).

The PLS 180 is usable for outside work, even if the beam is not visible, by purchasing a separate detector and using the "pulse" option with each of those settings. I now have the separate detector but I have not used the PLS 180 with it. Even so, I have used the PLS 180 outside. As you might expect, the beam becomes more visible the closer it is to the surface it is projecting onto and the less direct sunlight there is.

I have subjected my PLS-180 to fairly light use. I only began using it in earnest during the last 1.5 years, during which I used it daily to set lines for framing. I was the only one using it and I did not lend it to subs or employees.

I purchased my PLS-180 about 6 years ago. It worked great and was very helpful at the time. Then I put it away. I took it out recently for a project, and boy was I surprised. The line was off by 10 inches over 6 feet!

Seeing other comments here indicating that Pacific Laser Systems would be of no help, I figured it'd be worth a shot trying to fix it myself. Between my wits and the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit (that kit is worth every penny!), things worked out great. Here's how.

* Slide off the battery cover and take out the batteries
* Use a Torx T6 driver to remove the four screws found under the batteries
* SLOWLY remove the back (there are a set of thin, short wires connecting the back and the inner parts)
* Slide out the brass anchor
* Tug on the large rubber piece at the top of the inner workings to pull out tho
se inner workings

Turns out there's magnet at the bottom of the unit that pulls down the pendulum (if that's what you call it). The magnet has a foil coating stuck to it. The coating had come undone and curled up, inhibiting the pendulum's movement. I scraped off the foil and reassembled everything. Voila! (My wife then called me Sylar. :)

UPDATE, March 2014: I emailed PLS' customer support shortly after writing this review, asking if my repair, above, would cause problems in the long run due to the magnet oxidizing. They promptly replied, saying there had been a production problem back then that has subsequently been addressed. Plus they'd be glad to replace my unit for free. Both points were good to hear. I haven't taken them up on it yet. I figured there's no need to waste something that's working.
