This is an excellent laser. I was absolutely impressed with the beams, viewable angle, etc. But it is delicate. It came to me with the top plumb line glass broken. However, I was still able to try it out and the broken glass only interfered with a few spots on the top plumb line, but my impression was that the lense was thin and could be easily broken.

The 180 feature is incredible if you need it: I was taken aback by how well it really worked and I think both the level and plumb lines might have gone even past 180. If you stick this in a corner, the 180 will pretty much cover all walls. However, if there are applications where you do not need the 180 feature and you are putting at a height that may ultimately cross with your line of sight, then you are going to get an unnecessary eye full of laser quite often. My crew and I found that to be annoying and I understand it's not the healthiest thing for your eyes....

Bottom line: excellent piece of equipment to be used when you need the 180 feature, but NOT necessarily a replacement for a more durable, smaller fan angle cross line level.

We bought a PLS 180 for general purpose leveling; but find we use it very often for other tasks as well.
It takes seconds to get setup, and works as advertised.

One application where we unexpectedly found it quite useful for was screwing drywall ceilings. It is very quick to get the line on the rafter. We usually do not have a miss in 1000's of sq ft. of ceiling.
Also, we use it with a Velbon camera tripod; and not a standard builder's level type tripod. The camera tripod is very light weight and is more suited for indoor use. The camera tripod also fits the laser level with no adapter required, and the tripod has a nice height adjustment that is very useful when working with this laser.

One enhancement we'd like to see is a some sort of sliding shield on the front and top section of the lens to reduce the beam to just where we need it. This would reduce the likely-hood of eye contact with the laser when there are more than a few people on site. We currently use a piece of tape for this purpose when needed; and that works just fine too.

All-in-all, we are very happy with the PLS180. We think that this product has easily paid for itself by increasing our productivity.

So far so very good. I am horrible at keeping level over long distances and a laser is a must. SO far I have used the unit to level for a pool, cabinet installations and trim work. The laser is accurate and has been flawless so far. I baby the unit as it seems a bit fragile so it always stays in the case and i bought the tripod. Note if you get the tripod it comes with the threaded swivel head so you dont need to order one seperate, Amazon shows them as a seperate item, but they took it back without issue.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most useful tools I've ever purchased. I build handcrafted log homes where being able to layout your work on everything BUT flat surfaces is what we do. The PLS 180 is unbelievable in allowing us to create a flat plane of laser which allows us to measure and layout the cuts that we need to make. An entire book could be written on how to use this tool. Just buy it and you will see what I mean. I now have three of them so that I always have one handy.

This is a nice laser as described in the previous reviews, but I wanted to note a minor engineering defect: The SLD Detector mount does not fit on the bottom section (largest) of the PLS grade rod (without prying off the rubber feet, which makes it slide easier on the aluminum rod, which is undesireable). Poor design.... the SLD Detector mount should fit the grade rod (both made by PLS). When I contacted PLS, they basically said there is no fix and have a nice day. Annoying.

Orderd this laser with the pls3 from Tooltaker, of coarse right after order Amazon got it in stock. Pls3 came DOA probably from shipping so far, but was in perfect condition. Glad I got the 180, I am used to rotary laser that's used mostly outdoors. Nothing like turning the 180 on and seeing crisp bright line around the room, no need for the detector inside but got it for my exterior work on patios. Sent the pls3 back, was hoping for a refund but they are sending me another one. Bought a Dewalt laser plumb bob for now that works great for about $100. Next is a pls90 and should be able to handle anything.

I just wanted to comment on the prompt, courteous customer service I received with Pacific Laser Systems. I ordered this unit through Amazon to find it delivered with a crack in the rear detector LCD. Though contacting PLS direct though their website I received a voice response within 12 hours and they shipped me a replacement in 2 days. I wish there were other companies with such great customer service. Highly recommended.

The product itself is accurate, well made and packaged and will make my father happy for Christmas!
