Developed by the team behind X-Com games, one of the most enduring and popular PC game franchises, Laser Squad Nemesis brings a new addiction to tactical warfare gamers. With its unique and innovative turn-based combat system, combined with the action of real-time strategy games, you will plot battle orders, test them, and watch the results unfold as the forces of the Laser Marines, Greys, Machina, and Spawn fight for supremacy!

Establish your respective forces and strategies and then battle, against either a devious computer opponent or, via email, against other players from around the world, until one army is defeated or surrenders. Utilize the "test orders" function to fine-tune strategies, as well as rewind, pause, or review games using the Laser Squad Nemesis video-style controls. With destructible terrain, you can change the landscape with grenades, rockets, and other weapons, and the map creator lets you create your own battlefields.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Multiplayer X-Com, October 5, 2005
By
Pecos Bill (Gaithersburg, MD United States) - See all my reviews
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Laser Squad Nemesis (CD-ROM)
Definiately do not buy this game thinking you're going to get another big X-Com game that you can sit at home and play by yourself for hours on end.

This is multiplayer X-Com, for which there is a small monthly subscription.

However, if you WANT multiplayer X-Com, you'd do well to give this a shot. (You can also download a free demo of this game that will let you try-before-you-buy, look up the official website for more info.)

How it works:
There's a website for creating, joining and playing games against other people.

You play 1 turn, giving your troops their orders, much like in the original X-Com, then you push "Send". Your opponet does the same thing, the round is processed and then you download the results from the website and play another round.

This is a smooth and intuitive process but obviously the pace of gameplay will depend on the other person. If he only wants to do 1 round per day then that's the pace you go and it may take a couple weeks to finish a match. Sometimes you'll be sending turns back and forth rapid fire and go through a whole match in a couple hours. It just depends.

Usually you'll have several games running at the same time for this reason. You're ready to play and nobody has finished their turn? Start another match while you wait!

There's an integrated ladder system to pair you with players of similar skill and if the other player decides he's losing and just quits, then his game clock will eventually run out and the win will be handed to you.

The game itself is unsophisticated but pretty ammusing, and the strategy element from X-Com is there.

There are 4 teams to choose from:
Greys (big headed aliens) -- they favor shielding technology (which regenerates during gameplay) and powerful but slower firing energy weapons.

Mecha (robots) -- the root of the Mecha army are large, powerful robots with low speed, limited maneuverability in tight spaces and weapons that will blow entire teams to bits from across the map. But they also have smaller footsoldiers and flying scouts to round them out.

Spawn (bug-like aliens) -- Spawn are primarily about speed and swarming tactics. Their units tend to be weak but numerous and they are the only team that can hatch (literally) new units after the start of a match.

Laser Marines (humans) -- Although the Laser Marines lack the shielding of the Greys, the swarming of the Spawn or the long range explosive power of Mecha, they do feature the best snipers, medics and a handy bouncing grenade weapon for blasting enemies out of their bunkers.

The graphics of this game are non-spectacular.

It's purely for the enjoyment of people who wanted some nice multiplayer X-Com strategy gaming where you can sit back and really plan out your next move. Whereas most multiplayer strategy games require you to set aside at least a solid hour to finish a match, Laser Squad Nemesis is something you can do 5 minutes at a time here and there if you need to and still be making progress. It's Strategy At Your Own Pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you ever enjoyed the original ZX Spectrum sequel - get this one!, February 5, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Laser Squad Nemesis (CD-ROM)
Finally they made a wonderful remake of the classic. Again, tastes differ and a lot of people would find this game boring, totally unspectacular and would quickly put it aside. Not me.
I remember 15 years ago or so (maybe more),when my friend and I would play "Laser Squad" on ZX Spectrum (this was a computer - inside - of - a - keyboard with tapes used instead of harddrives at the end of 80's). Looks like I'm getting addicted again. It's not X-COM (I think that that's where that one stopped - the subsequent versions simply suck), so don't be fooled by the box. So buy this ONLY if you enjoyed the original.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT X-COM, September 4, 2005

= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Laser Squad Nemesis (CD-ROM)
The second I saw the box, it reminded of an old game I had previously owned. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember which one. While driving home after purchasing Nemesis, I started to recall what it had reminded me. Of course, it was "X-COM"! Lord, what an awesome game that was! I was so excited to jump in & play Nemesis! Unfortunately, the excitement didn't last very long.

Here's the bottom line: this game is NOT X-COM. The way you control your squad is similar to the original, but the game play just doesn't have the same excitement that the original series did. Maybe it's because it's too complicated now, or maybe it's just because I'm older now. Hard to say, but please, don't waste your $20.00 thinking it's anything like the old X-Com. You'll be disappointed.
