Stephen King's books do not always successfully translate to the screen, but in this case, the results are pretty good. Be aware that this was originally aired as a television mini-series, and it is more than 3 hours long. That being said, the pacing is lively enough so that you probably won't notice. Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown really helps elevate this production, and it was a bit of casting genius.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt that some key things in the book didn't make it onto the screen. I recognize the skill of the writers and producers in being able to get most of the key elements into the production, but in the final 20 minutes, I felt that things were being "hurried along" to get the end of the story. Without giving anything away, I can say that in the book, you get a much better sense of "It" and where it came from.

In the book, for example, Stephen King actually manages to make you feel for the creature... a little... before the end comes. In the video version, the creature is simply a monster to be dispatched.

And for those who have read the book, the notorious "loss of innocence/bonding" scene is notably absent from the video, for obvious reasons. However, this does not affect the flow of the story.

If you have not read the book, you will probably be able to fully enjoy this feature on its own merits. If for no other reason, see this to witness Tim Curry in a fantastic role.

This is one of the best movies of my young adult days. Stephen King outdid himself with It. I really enjoyed it.

I have always liked this movie. Great actors and actresses. It might be an older movie, but it is a must watch.

I have said this many times in my life. Many, many, oh so many times.....TIM CURRY IS THE GREATEST ACTOR IN THE HISTORY OF ACTING. Obviously when dealt with the task of having to cast someone to play a super creepy clown, a clown which haunts the dreams of those young and old who watch this film, Tim Curry is the first name to pop into anyone's mind. That voice....that face.....everything about Tim Curry screams, "Weird Creepy Guy...but I'd probably still do him anyway". His performance of "Sweet Transvestite" in Rocky Horror is to forever be known as EPIC BRILLIANCE! No one could pull off a song like that...no one but Tim Curry! Then we look at the not so known film "The Worst Witch"--A movie I watched every single Halloween as a kid. Why did I watch it every Halloween? No, not because of the story of the poor clumsy girl who couldn't get her act together in witch school, who was always taunted and teased by those around her only to triumph as the greatest little witch girl ever at the end. No. The reason was always, I repeat, ALWAYS because I had to watch the scene of Tim Curry (AKA-The Grand Wizard that every girl in witch school was in love with) sing that HORRIBLE Halloween song. Yes, the lyrics to that song are absolutely awful, but when Tim Curry sings them it somehow makes the song fall into the category of greatest ever, right up there with "Little Red Corvette" by Prince, and even "Baby" by Justin Beiber. When Tim Curry sings that horrid Halloween song he sings it with heart and soul, something no other actor, not even Peter Ustinov or Laurence Olivier could pull off. As far as I'm concerned, anything with Tim Curry in it should be considered a classic.....does the dude have any Oscar awards?? If not he should get one...not for any movies he has played in but just because he is TIM CURRY!

This was not the full movie. It says 3 hours 8 mins and it cut off in the middle at the scene where Stan killed himself. Chapter 27.

This moving is a classic but after re-watching it recently with my daughter it really was more campy and B than I remembered it. It really is a shame that this wasn't remade to be a really horror movie that Stephen King could be proud of.

The plot lines are what are expected but the effects have a hint of cheesiness even for the time it was produced.
