Saves Me Lots of Money on Electricity!,
By Frederick W. Chapman "Consultant/Scientist at... (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lasko 20" Weather-shield W Thermo (Kitchen)
I bought four of these fans to force hot air out of my second-floor apartment on cool summer nights. It's working exactly as I'd hoped and saving me a lot of money on electricity. It costs mere pennies to run these fans. I took measurements and determined that the Lasko 3755 draws only 40-75 watts of power, depending on the speed setting. That's the amount of power used by one light bulb!
Last summer, I was shocked to discover that constantly running my central air conditioning doubles or triples my electric bill. I then started using my A/C very selectively but found that just opening the windows in the evening didn't release the hot air which gets trapped inside during the day. Now with two fans blowing in and two fans blowing out, I can create a strong breeze in my apartment to bring the cool air in and blow the hot air out for very little money. Here's an example which shows how well this works and how little it costs. Last night, it was 82 degrees in my apartment and 67 degrees outside. Running all four fans on high for one hour cooled my apartment by 7 degrees. The fans drew 300 watts of power and used 0.3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. I pay about 12 cents/kWh, which means it cost me a grand total of 3.6 cents to cool my entire apartment! In summary, I am very happy with my purchase. These fans do exactly what I bought them to do and will pay for themselves in less than one summer.

Great fan for the money,
This review is from: Lasko 20" Weather-shield W Thermo (Kitchen)
This fan is a great fan for the money. Of course, if you pay twice as much you will get a fan that moves more air, but for my purposes, this one works great. I live alone in a small house and I am able to cool off my entire house at night by using this fan as an exhaust fan in a window on my first floor. It pulls air from my 2 bedroom windows upstairs in addition to the other rooms on my first floor. The thermostat is a great feature, which causes it to shut off around 3 or 4 AM, after my whole house is cooled. It also would be the perfect size for an apartment. As other reviews have suggested, buy it elsewhere. It is $20 at the Home Depot.

Features, Quality, Price, Shipping.. what else is there?,

The BASICS:
First let me say that Lasko makes the best fans that I have found widely available in the under-$50 range. All their products are very good quality in each of their price ranges, so I'll focus on Lasko. (info on all their products are viewable on their Laskoproducts.com web site) They are USA made and designed. They currently make five 20-inch standard "box fan" designs.. 1. the economy fan is the 3733 Box Fan (rectangular all-over grill pattern without a shroud), 2. the 3723 Premium box fan adds a circular grill pattern fanning out from the center for improved air-flow, 3. the 3720 Weathershield Performance fan has the circular grid and adds a "weathershield" motor for improved resistance to water damage such as might occur in a window mounted situation 4. the 3750 UltraForce fan with thermostat has the circular grill, adds a shroud around the blade circumference which channels the air at a higher force level, a slightly wider body for more stability plus includes a thermostat to allow no-attendance usage based on air temperature, and finally 5. the 3755 Weathershield with thermostat which has all the "plus" features and a wider yet box for more stability The BUY: Each of these fans is available from various sellers through and including Amazon. Prices can vary widely depending on various sellers and situations and shipping rates. They are in order of generally increasing price. The economy 3733 unit is often featured as "draw" or "loss-leader" items at "big box" stores across the entire US during the "hot" season, often for $15-$20 out the door. It is a very good value if you find that situation. The rectangular grid shows at a glance that it is this model. I have only heard of one instance where this happened with the "higher quality" units, but it can happen so keep your eyes peeled :) Occasionally, as with most manufacturers, they will supply some "big buyer" with a "special" which has a different model number in order to make "comparison shopping" more difficult. Given the feature descriptions above you should be able to zero in on the "grade" of fan independent of the model number. The QUALITY: All of the Lasko fans are good quality and I can't say that a higher priced unit is "better" or will last longer. It depends on how important the various features and functions are to you and how you're using the fan. In most cases I expect the cheapest will work fine for most people. You be the judge.. for example if you're using it for a window mounted fan which you leave up, you definitely should purchase one of the "weathershield" units.. if "automatic temperature operation" is needed, you need one with a thermostat, etc. The shrouds provide high-pressure airflow into a situation where there is "back pressure" against the airflow. The circular grill gives higher, smoother, and possibly quieter, airflow but it may well be that the difference isn't that important.. they all can move considerable air. This UNIT: This unit (3755) is a very nice, window-usable fan with the high airflow and shroud. At under $30 with "free" Super-Saver shipping, this is a great deal if you need those features. If you don't need it, look for a "deal" on the cheapie 3733 at a box store near you. (edit: Ooops.. price went up $10 bucks! Pretty steep at nearly $40.. perhaps watch for price opportunities)
