Maria Kurenko, after too long a period of neglect, is again coming to the attention of those who appreciate the "Golden Age" of the voice. Few recordings of hers were ever available, but of the several that did reach our ears, none are less than supreme. As an erstwhile musicologist, I, Francis Baumli, do not risk my reputation in stating the following: Maria Kurenko has an extremely agile voice, a well-rounded tone that became even more full as her career progressed, and the range of her repertoire--from Mozart to Chopin--is dizzying. If she is at her best with Mussorgsky, she is at her most unique with Mozart, and there is no singer--ever--who could add coloratura so beautiful, complex, and emancipated as to warrant its sometimes being called a cadenza. Let us hope that the public, over the next decade, will be graced with reissues of all her recordings. And wouldn't it be a treat if someone would do an in-depth biography on her!
