Format: Paperback
I first bought a copy of this large format, glossy "photo" book on Lassen, at the local coin shop, of all places. The owner specializes in outdoor books on Northern California, and I just plain lucked-out.

This has to be the most beautiful book ever written on Lassen, and in fact the author was a park ranger there for I believe eight years. The text is incredibly informative and well written and the photos are awesome....

I've written a lot of reviews on Amazon, but this is a no-brainer! If you have ANY interest in beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park, then you have to have this book. If the rest of this series is anything like this, then we all should check out the series of books from this publisher.

This is a great introduction to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is worth the price just for the great color photography; however, it is also very well written and organized! Ellis Richard (a former Lassen National Park ranger) tells of the history of the early settlers of the area in an entertaining way including some great stories concerning the people who witnessed the surprising eruption of Lassen Peak in 1914. This book tells the story of the dynamic geologic forces that formed the Lassen area with a wonderful description of how the plants and animals of the area have evolved together over the ages and what species one is likely to find today on a visit to the park. Really a 'stand out' book!

bought this because we're going to Lassen next month. it gives a great description of the volcanic geologic history as well as the people who witnessed the events. also good description of flora and fauna. beautiful photos. an easy 48 page read. copyrighted 1988 my copy was printed 1998. there is at least one geologist currently studying the park so there likely are updates to the theories described in this book but it is an excellent overview for the amater and interesting to read. i enjoyed learning about the settlers and hikers impacted by the eruptions.
