Book Description

September 29, 2003 4 and upP and up
They're the rootinest-tootinest cowboys this side of the Pecos! With his spiffy new cowboy hat, McCoy is ready to ride the range as soon as he can figure out how to get on his horse. Luckily his pal Lasso Lou is there to help McCoy saddle up. And then, they're both in for a wild ride!

This warmhearted and wonderfully silly western tale introduces a pair of crazy cowpokes who, for all their bumbling, know that every adventure is better with a friend along to share the ride.

Pictures by Tedd Arnold.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-When McCoy shops for a new hat, the only one that fits him is a ten-gallon topper, and his purchase instantly transforms him (he thinks) into a cowboy. However, it takes more than fancy headgear to make a ranch hand, and luck prevails when McCoy bumps into Lasso Lou and the two become partners. The first day at the Bo-Dee-Oh Ranch is difficult for McCoy, and his antics as he tries to lasso and mount a horse are laugh-out-loud funny. This story is more than just a silly cowboy romp; it has a tender undertone as Lasso Lou patiently stands by McCoy and helps him to learn the ins and outs of his new profession. The cartoon artwork, done in watercolor washes and colored pencils, is drawn with exaggerated lines, and the characters, including the ranch animals, are wonderfully expressive. A lighthearted tale with a strong message about friendship.

More About the Author

I think I've been reading and writing forever. I typed my first book on a manual Smith Corona when I was in sixth grade. It was called "A Little Bit of Me." The only copy has been missing for years. Maybe someone's waiting for just the right time to sell it on eBay...

I grew up in the Jenkintown/Abington suburb of Philadelphia, PA, where my father had a camera business. I graduated from Elizabethtown College and later earned a master's degree in reading from Arcadia University. For over twenty years, I taught elementary school. It was during this time that I started imagining the characters in my first picture book, "Lasso Lou and Cowboy McCoy."

In 1998, we moved to Cape May Court House, NJ. I "retired" from my teaching job to be a full-time writer. In the fall of 2003, we were transferred to Cape Cod, MA. Some of my favorite things about Cape Cod were the Museum of Science in Boston, Plimouth Plantation, the Coast Guard Beach and Ice Cream Sandwich (located on 6A in Sandwich) which has the best ever non-fat coffee health bar frozen yogurt.

Then, in the summer of 2008, we drove across the country from Cape Cod to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. From there, we boarded a ferry to Southeastern Alaska and our new home in Ketchikan. For two weeks, our home-sweet-home was a local hotel while they painted the home we're renting. The day we moved in, Ketchikan was doing something it does well - raining. Hard. Very hard. All day.

But since then, I have come to like the rain. I like working at my computer in my study. The view out the window is of pine trees, mountains and the mist that floats through it all. In the fall, the mountains are snow-capped and the Narrows is visible out the loft window.

Some of my favorite things about Ketchikan are the many hiking trails, amazing wildlife, the mountain peaks, Herring Cove and fresh (it really is unbelievable...) salmon. There is so much to do here with art openings, the Monthly Grind (a town talent show), theater productions, and other special events.

Some of my other favorite things (besides reading and writing) are chocolate chip cookies, hiking, biking and playing games with my family. Their antics continue to supply me with writing inspiration. And what's even better - they usually laugh at my jokes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still reading this book, January 5, 2009
This review is from: Lasso Lou and Cowboy McCoy (Hardcover)
Our son received this book as a Christmas present five years ago and we're still reading it! I'd say it's his favorite picture book... the one we'll save for him to read to his children. We all love Tedd Arnold's art Parts (Picture Puffins)and the story line has a slapstick kind of humor that appeals to adults as well as children. I read the book to my son's kindergarten class and everyone giggled long and loud at the part where Cowboy McCoy mounts his trusty steed Payday only to find his horse doesn't have a head!

This review is from: Lasso Lou and Cowboy McCoy (Hardcover)
My 5-year-old son had originally checked this book out at our public library, but after reading it countless times we knew we had to purchase it!!! It is a very funny book for both kids and adults to enjoy together. My son loves to act different parts of the book and whenever we read it together we always use a "cowboy accent". :) I think both girls and boys will enjoy this book and parents won't mind reading this one over and over!
