This is the third and final in an excellent series of books by Jonathan Wylie. I was lucky enough to pick these up cheap at a garage sale - they're not easy to find now! But keep an eye out for them in the secondhand book stores cos they are worth the read!

PLOT:
Xantium, the once glorius capital of a great empire, is now a burning shell that harbours unimaginable evil. The Empress Ifryn and her family have fled to the Southern lands, while Fen, Dsordas and their companions have returned to Zalys, their island home. But even in these remote places they are not safe, and their battle with the usurper, Chancellor Verkho, is far from over.
