5.0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is "The End"!, August 7, 2008

This review is from: The Last Avengers Story (Paperback)
Marvel's "The End" line annoys me like no other. These stories are rarely the end by any means, and it makes it look like Marvel is afraid to do anything interesting with their characters, even when they give themselves free rein to do so. Not so with THE LAST AVENGERS STORY, collected in this long out-of-print trade paperback from the mid-'90s. Written by Peter David and illustrated by Ariel Olivetti, THE LAST AVENGERS STORY is perhaps the darkest tale I have ever read from Marvel. There is so much death and destruction in this story, and I have to give Marvel credit for publishing something that presents such a bleak future for their universe. In this story, all of Hank Pym's problems (in short: Ultron) come home to roost, and it spells disaster for the team.

David builds an excellent, involving story that is just the right length. It pulls characters from all periods of Avengers history, including times to come. He also throws the reader some teasers as to the fates of other heroes and villains, letting us fill in the blanks. Olivetti's painted art is beautiful, but slightly exaggerated (resembling Simon Bisley in places). This is one of my most treasured Marvel books, and I place it directly behind Avengers Forever as the greatest Avengers story ever told. It is slated to be rereleased by Marvel in hardcover late this year under the title AVENGERS: FIRST TO LAST, combined with the backup stories from Avengers Classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPOILER ALERT!!!, June 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Avengers Story (Paperback)
Don't read this review unless you've read this tpb already! This was an excellent story about a possible future of the Avengers. Although the art is great and the plot dramatic (dramatic in a good way), some of the scenes were predictable (the last page for instance). This is all made up for though with the explanation of the Hulk's death, as well as Kang's death (even though he probably wouldn't have really died due to the device he uses [read Avenger's Forever TPB]).
The whole Ultron in charge thing was good, as was the blood and tragedy thing of a certain brother and sister. My only problem with this story: Where is Iron Man? Still, 5 stars for dropping that bomb on Avengers HQ.
