Glitman and his book is essential reading for anyone who seeks to learn the behind-the-scenes story of the hard work by dedicated diplomats who brought the world back from the brink. Part revealing memoir, part insightful diplomatic history, this is a remarkably thorough book that is essential reading for anyone who wishes to know how peace came in our time.

Mr. Glitman's book opened up a new perspective on dealing with the Soviet Union during the latter stages of the Cold War. The years of work, progress, and set-backs experienced by the negotiations makes our work as inspectors, after the treaty was signed and ratified, seem easy. While at the time many of us inspectors felt the treaty was burdensome and overly complicated, the book illustrates that the negotiations were truly a battle that had to leave both sides satified. I recommend the book to anyone who is interested in relations between the U.S. at a time when Europe's fate literally hung in the balance.
